Low gas use does not automatically rule out a heat pump or prove it will save you little. It does mean you should compare your actual gas costs with the proposed system’s modeled electricity use, your tariffs and any gas standing charge you would stop paying. Eligible Scottish owner-occupiers may qualify for a heat-pump grant of up to £7,500, but that is a cap, not a guaranteed payment.
Could low gas use mean a heat pump won’t save you much?
It could limit the gas spending available to replace, but annual gas use alone cannot predict your heat-pump bill or savings. The result depends on how much heat your home needs, the proposed system’s performance, installation quality, the heating system it replaces, your energy tariffs and the controls.
Home Energy Scotland’s examples for a gas-heated semi-detached home put annual savings at around £80 with a medium-performing heat pump and around £170 with a high-performing one. These are illustrations, not a forecast for a low-gas-use home or a promise of savings for your household. The figures and variables are described in Home Energy Scotland’s heat-pump guidance.
If you remove the gas supply after switching to an all-electric home, you may also avoid the gas standing charge. Home Energy Scotland gave an illustration of around £128 a year in January 2026, while noting that standing charges change. That saving applies only if the gas account and supply end; it is separate from the heat-pump running-cost comparison.

Is the £7,500 grant available to you?
The Scottish Government’s Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme offers qualifying applicants up to £7,500 as a heat-pump grant, subject to funding availability. An optional interest-free loan of up to a further £7,500 may also be available. Eligible remote rural and island addresses may qualify for a £1,500 grant uplift, raising the heat-pump grant cap to £9,000; eligibility depends on the scheme’s postcode assessment, not simply on an address seeming rural. Check the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan overview and current terms before making plans.
The scheme is for qualifying applicants who own and live in an existing Scottish home as their only or primary private residence. Second homes and holiday homes are not eligible, and receiving benefits is not a requirement. The funded heat pump must provide all of the home’s heating and hot water; hybrid systems are excluded. Heat-pump products and installers must meet the scheme’s MCS certification requirements.

What might you pay after the grant?
Home Energy Scotland lists illustrative average installed costs of £13,000 for an air-to-water heat pump and £34,000 for a ground-source heat pump. After the standard £7,500 grant, its guide shows £5,500 and £26,500 respectively. These figures are based on mean invoices from Home Energy Scotland applicants from 2019 to 2025, with inflationary uplifts applied to earlier years. They include homes needing extensive upgrades as well as homes needing little work, so they are not quotes. Costs can include pipework, a hot-water cylinder or upgraded radiators. See Home Energy Scotland’s cost and savings guidance.

- Made from top quality and durable Materiasl
Your own amount depends on the assessed installation price, eligible work and the grant actually offered. Ask for a quote that separates the heat-pump installation from any insulation, radiator or other upgrade work, and account for optional loan repayments separately. The published examples do not establish your payback period.
How to assess whether switching makes financial sense
- Gather your current figures. Use actual annual gas consumption and bills, your gas tariff and standing charge, and your electricity tariff. Check whether you use gas for anything besides heating and hot water.
- Request a home assessment and system design. Ask the installer for the proposed heat pump’s modeled annual electricity use and the expected work needed to supply the whole home’s heating and hot water.
- Compare annual energy costs on your tariffs. Compare your current gas costs with the modeled heat-pump electricity costs. Include the gas standing charge as a saving only if you intend to end the gas supply; do not count it if the account stays open.
- Compare upfront costs separately. Apply only the grant amount confirmed for your application to the installation quote. Include required home upgrades and any optional loan repayments rather than treating the grant as the whole project cost.
Without your gas use, tariffs, proposed electricity consumption and an installation quote, a reliable household savings or payback figure cannot be calculated. Home Energy Scotland’s examples can provide context, but they should not be scaled up or down in proportion to your gas bill.

When should you apply and start the work?
Do not let installation work begin until you have received the written funding offer. Submitting an application does not reserve the money; the offer does. The scheme is first-come, first-served and depends on available budget. The current scheme terms also require a post-installation EPC with the claim.
Quick Recap
- Contact Home Energy Scotland to check applicant and address eligibility.
- Arrange an assessment and obtain a quotation for eligible whole-home heating and hot-water work from an MCS-certified installer using a qualifying product.
- Submit the grant and, if wanted, loan application. Wait for the written funding offer before work starts.
- After the work is complete, submit the claim documentation, including the required post-installation EPC. The Scottish Government’s scheme process page describes separate application-before-work and claim-after-completion stages.
