scipy.misc is a legacy SciPy namespace, not a current set of essential functions: SciPy deprecated it in version 1.10 and removed all its functions in version 1.15. If older code imports from it, identify what each function was used for and migrate that task to an appropriate supported API. For dataset retrieval, SciPy points to scipy.datasets; that is not a replacement for every historical function.
What was in scipy.misc?
The SciPy 1.12 reference described scipy.misc as a collection of miscellaneous utilities that did not have another home. Its functions included sample data and numerical-differentiation helpers. These are examples of the old API, not functions you can expect to import from current SciPy.
| Legacy function | What it provided |
|---|---|
ascent |
An 8-bit grayscale demonstration image. |
face |
A sample color raccoon image. |
electrocardiogram |
An example electrocardiogram signal. |
derivative |
A numerical-differentiation helper. |
central_diff_weights |
A helper for calculating weights used in central finite differences. |
These functions appear in the SciPy 1.12 legacy reference, which marked the module deprecated since 1.10.0. Its reference anticipated removal in SciPy 2.0, but the functions were removed earlier, in SciPy 1.15.
When was scipy.misc removed?
The transition happened in two stages. SciPy deprecated the module in version 1.10.0, then removed all its functions in version 1.15. The SciPy 1.15 release notes state that all functions in the scipy.misc submodule have been removed. The current SciPy development roadmap says all features have been removed and that the namespace itself will eventually be removed.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters when diagnosing old projects: finding a reference to scipy.misc does not mean the import works in a current SciPy installation. The functions are gone, and the namespace is also slated for eventual removal.
What replaced scipy.misc?
For dataset retrieval
For retrieving datasets that were formerly associated with scipy.misc, SciPy’s documented direction is scipy.datasets. The SciPy 1.10 release notes describe the dedicated submodule and recommend it for dataset methods. Check its current documentation for the specific dataset and supported usage your code needs.

For numerical differentiation and other tasks
scipy.datasets is not a general replacement for the old module. A dataset API cannot replace numerical-differentiation helpers such as derivative or central_diff_weights. Identify the operation your code performs, then choose a supported API or library that provides that operation. SciPy’s release notes do not give a complete function-by-function replacement map, so avoid swapping imports based only on the old module name.
How to fix an import error from scipy.misc
If an application fails on an import such as from scipy.misc import face, the durable fix is to migrate the code rather than assume the removed function is available in current SciPy.

- Find each old reference. Search the project for
scipy.miscand imports of names such asascent, face, electrocardiogram, derivative, orcentral_diff_weights. - Determine what the code needs. Separate sample-data retrieval from numerical differentiation and any other operation; the function name alone may not capture how the project uses its result.
- Choose a task-appropriate supported API. Use
scipy.datasetsfor dataset retrieval where applicable. For other tasks, select a maintained API or library that actually performs the required operation. - Update and test the code. Replace the imports and adjust call sites as needed, then run the project’s tests using the SciPy version the project supports.
