A modified version of a roughly £70 handheld window-tint meter can estimate how much water a leaf holds without cutting or drying it. The peer-reviewed study behind the device, published in August 2026, presents it as a low-cost input that could help inform wildfire-risk monitoring. It is not a fire predictor, and the study did not test it as an early-warning system.
How does the handheld gadget measure leaf water?
The starting device was the Linshang Technology LS162A, a handheld meter designed to measure how much light passes through automotive window tint. The study’s authors, Luke A. Brown and F. Mark Danson, kept the meter’s body and optics but replaced its light sources with two LEDs that emit at 940 nm and 1450 nm. The modified build measures how much light at each wavelength passes through a leaf.
| Wavelength | Role in the measurement |
|---|---|
| 1450 nm | Water absorbs strongly near this wavelength, so transmitted light falls as leaf water rises. |
| 940 nm | Reference wavelength. It helps offset differences in leaf structure that would otherwise distort the reading. |
The reading is the logarithm of the ratio between transmittance at 940 nm and transmittance at 1450 nm. Because the reference wavelength is divided out, the ratio is less sensitive to how a particular leaf is built than a single-wavelength reading would be. Converting that ratio into a water value requires a calibration curve, and the study found that curve differs by species (see the limits below).
How was the approach tested?
The work had two stages, one modeled and one physical.

Stage one: simulated leaves
The authors first generated 1,000 modeled virtual leaves using the PROSPECT leaf optical-properties model, which predicts how a leaf interacts with light from its structure and water content. This let them check how the ratio should behave before using real plant material.
Stage two: leaf dehydration in 2026
The team then dried real leaves from six species: winter wheat, rapeseed, beech, birch, hazel and sycamore. Leaves were measured repeatedly as they dried. Each measurement was compared with two reference values obtained by weighing leaves: gravimetric equivalent water thickness (EWT), which describes water mass per unit leaf area, and fuel moisture content (FMC).
What the relationships were
Across the six species, the logarithm of the transmittance ratio tracked both reference measures closely. The paper reports the following ranges.

| Reference measure | What it describes | Coefficient of determination (r²) | Root-mean-square error (RMSE) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equivalent water thickness (EWT) | Water mass per unit leaf area | r² ≥ 0.85 | RMSE ≤ 0.05 |
| Fuel moisture content (FMC) | Water held in vegetation relative to its dry mass, the measure most tied to fire behavior | r² ≥ 0.81 | RMSE ≤ 0.79 (in the paper’s FMC units) |
These figures describe agreement between the optical reading and the weighed reference in Brown et al. (2026). They are not a measure of how often the device would correctly flag a fire.
Can a cheap tint meter really warn about wildfires?
Not on the evidence so far. The study links leaf water status to vegetation combustibility and fuel moisture, which is why it matters for fire-risk work. But it measured leaf water and fuel moisture in the lab; it did not test whether readings predict ignition or forecast how a fire spreads. A realistic reading is that a device like this could become one low-cost input into a wider monitoring effort, where it would sit alongside other data rather than issue alerts by itself.
Limits of the evidence
- Species-specific calibration is required. The calibration functions differed among the six species, so a reading from one plant cannot be turned into a water value using another species’ curve.
- Accuracy falls at very low water content. The relationships became nonlinear when leaves were severely dehydrated. The authors suggest that severe drying may change leaf structure enough that the 940 nm reference no longer compensates well.
- Testing was controlled. The modeling and dehydration experiments were not a broad validation across wild vegetation, landscapes or seasons.
- No fire-service deployment was reported. The study does not describe use by any fire agency, farm or classroom in operation.
What did the modified build cost?
The study’s component table lists the costs below at the time of purchase. They are not current retail prices, and they reflect one purchase, not a standard kit.

How does this compare with conventional sampling?
The standard method is gravimetric sampling: leaves are collected, weighed, dried and weighed again. The paper describes it as the gold standard but labor-intensive and destructive. The table sets it against the modified meter and against high-specification field instruments.
| Approach | Destructive? | Speed | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gravimetric sampling (weigh, dry, weigh) | Yes | Labor-intensive; speed not stated | Not stated in the study |
| High-specification field instruments | Not stated | Not stated | Described in the paper as expensive |
| Modified LS162A tint meter | No, the leaf is not damaged | Readings in seconds, per the lead author | About £140 build at time of purchase |
