A new study proposes that the solid Earth reoriented relative to its spin axis several times over the past 320 million years, including twice during the age of dinosaurs. The strongest signals it reports are from about 150–140 million years ago and 100–90 million years ago. These are patterns in reconstructed ancient flooding and exposure—not direct observations of the planet tipping, and not evidence that Earth suddenly flipped over.
What does “Earth axis shift” mean?
The study concerns true polar wander (TPW): a change in the orientation of the solid Earth relative to its spin axis. It is a global reorientation of the solid planet, distinct from tectonic plates shifting position relative to one another.
TPW is also not the same as a magnetic-pole reversal. The study’s claim is about the orientation of the solid Earth, inferred from geological evidence; it does not report a sudden change in Earth’s present-day axis.

Mathew Domeier and colleagues published “Quadrupolar sea-level fluctuations reveal episodes of rapid polar wander” in Science on 1 October 2026. They analyzed reconstructed maps of continental flooding and exposure spaced at 10-million-year intervals, using statistical modeling across the past 320 million years. The study’s release reports four intervals with significant signals consistent with rapid TPW, but highlights two as having the strongest evidence: the study’s AAAS/EurekAlert release.

The intervals are approximate geological ranges, not dates for a single instantaneous event. The release does not provide numerical statistical thresholds or confidence ranges for each interval, so the four signals cannot be ranked more precisely from that summary.
How can ancient flooding reveal a change in orientation?
The authors’ approach looks for broad, paired patterns of relative sea-level rise and fall across continents. If the solid Earth reorients, the distribution of water relative to the continents can produce a large-scale pattern of changing flooding and exposure. The researchers tested reconstructed maps for patterns consistent with that prediction.

This is an indirect inference: the maps preserve geological reconstructions, not a direct record of the ancient spin axis. Tectonic plate motion can also affect where land lies and how it floods, potentially creating a similar pattern. As the study’s release notes, separating plate motion from global reorientation is a central challenge.
How does this relate to the disputed 84-million-year claim?
The new study is distinct from an earlier debate about a proposed Late Cretaceous TPW oscillation around 84 million years ago. A 2021 Nature Communications paper inferred an approximately 12° oscillation from 86 to 78 million years ago using high-resolution paleomagnetic data from two overlapping stratigraphic sections in Italy. Its authors also described the broader evidence as geographically limited, with uncertainty in reconstructing the Pacific Plate’s ancient geography. Read the 2021 paper.

A 2023 Earth and Planetary Science Letters paper challenged that interpretation, arguing that paleomagnetic overprints can produce misleading signals. Read the 2023 paper. That disagreement concerns the earlier paleomagnetic claim; it is not a direct refutation of the 2026 study’s separate method based on continental flooding and exposure.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
- It supports a method for looking for TPW: the study tests broad flooding-and-exposure patterns rather than relying only on paleomagnetic records.
- It reports four candidate intervals: two receive the strongest emphasis in the release, while the other two should not be treated as equally strong.
- It does not directly show the ancient axis moving: the result rests on reconstructed geological patterns and statistical interpretation.
- It does not settle all prior TPW disputes: particularly, the older Late Cretaceous paleomagnetic interpretation remains contested, and that evidence uses a different method.
