Brian David Gilbert’s Unraveled episode “Scientifically Calculating the Game of the Year” turns the search for 2018’s best game into a joke about how numbers can make a subjective choice look objective. A 2024 retrospective says the formula effectively points to the game with the most Google hits, leaving Fortnite as an unsatisfying possible winner. The gag is the mismatch between statistical authority and personal taste—not a validated way to rank games.
What is the Unraveled episode about?
Listed as Season 1, Episode 6 and aired December 30, 2018, the episode follows Brian David Gilbert as he develops a statistical formula to calculate the best game of 2018, according to TheTVDB’s episode listing. Its premise borrows the language of rigorous analysis to tackle a judgment that depends on what people value in a game.
What game does the formula pick?
A 2024 retrospective describes the calculation as boiling down to choosing the game with the most Google hits, and identifies Fortnite as an unsatisfying possible winner. That account is useful for understanding the punchline, but it is not an independently reproduced calculation or a transcript of the episode. The reported outcome is part of the joke; it does not show that Fortnite was objectively the best game of 2018.
Is the calculation actually scientific?
Not in the sense of a validated ranking method. The episode database confirms that the show presents a statistical formula, while the retrospective characterizes its methodology as flawed and the bad result as a comic twist. The variables, equations, data sources, and full calculation are not established by those accounts, so there is no basis for reconstructing or evaluating a precise model.

The humor comes from treating a culturally loaded question as if it can be settled by a formula. A count such as Google hits can measure attention, but attention is not the same thing as quality or an individual player’s favorite. The more authoritative the calculation sounds, the more conspicuous the gap becomes between its apparent precision and what “Game of the Year” means to a person.
Why does the ending return to personal preference?
In the retrospective author’s account, the resolution is to let a reader name their own favorite as their Game of the Year if Fortnite is not satisfying as the answer. That turn makes the episode’s point: data can supply a result, but it cannot settle every question of taste. A personal GOTY choice does not need to win a popularity contest to matter to the person making it.

Where to find the episode context
TheTVDB’s listing provides the episode’s season and episode number, air date, and stated premise. The interpretation of the reported Google-hits outcome and the ending comes from Cube Drone’s January 17, 2024 retrospective; it should be read as that author’s account rather than a verified transcript.
