Many schools in Ireland are expected to close on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, if the planned public-service strike goes ahead. That is a national expectation, not confirmation that every school will shut: the available sources do not provide a complete school-by-school list. Check messages from your child’s school for its arrangements.
Why are schools expected to close on October 14?
Fórsa’s education FAQ says members of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) and the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland (ASTI) were scheduled to strike on October 14 and again on October 21. The FAQ described the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) ballot as still pending, so participation by all three unions should not be treated as settled on that information alone. Fórsa’s education FAQ
Fórsa says the coordinated public-service action follows the expiry of the Public Service Agreement 2024–2026 in June and exploratory talks that did not produce an agreement. The union attributes the dispute to the absence of a credible approach to pay and cost-of-living pressures. That is Fórsa’s account of the dispute. In its public-sector FAQ, the union says, “There are currently no talks taking place.” Fórsa’s public-service FAQ

Which schools are likely to close?
The Irish Times reported on September 29 that almost all schools were expected to close if the action continued. This is a reported expectation, not a confirmed list or guarantee for any particular school. The Irish Times report

JOE.ie reported on October 2 that warning notices had been sent to parents through the Aladdin school messaging system. Its report does not identify every school that sent a notice, and receiving or not receiving a notice is not a substitute for checking the school’s latest direct update. JOE.ie report
How to check your child’s school status
- Check the school’s latest message, email, website or parent communication channel, including Aladdin if your school uses it.
- If the message is unclear or no update has arrived, contact the school directly and ask whether it expects to open on October 14 and what arrangements apply to your child.
- Check again nearer the date. The strike plans and local arrangements may change as unions and schools issue updates.
Fórsa’s civil-service FAQ, last updated October 2, said a separate strike FAQ was due before October 14. For changes to union plans, check current union notices as well as the school’s own communications. Fórsa’s civil-service FAQ
