To review activity in one class, open the Schoology course and select Analytics. To review activity across an organization, an administrator can go to Tools > Usage Analytics. These reports measure recorded access and material activity—not a student’s attention or learning—and their update timing and permissions differ.
Choose the Schoology analytics view that matches your question
| View | Scope and access | What it shows | Freshness and output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Course Analytics | One course; available from the course to users with access to the feature | Course-member access summaries and individual material activity, including access and submission details | Documented as updating hourly; review in the dashboard |
| Usage Analytics | Organization-level; administrator access is subject to the View School Analytics permission and associated buildings | Aggregate activity, including active users, sessions, materials created, and material views and submissions | Data may be up to 24 hours old; administrators can export a date range |
Use Course Analytics when you need to investigate activity in a particular class or student’s materials. Use Usage Analytics for broader organizational patterns. The two views are not interchangeable: Usage Analytics is an aggregate view, while Course Analytics supplies course-level detail. See PowerSchool’s Course Analytics documentation and Usage Analytics documentation.
View activity in a course
- Open the course you want to review.
- Select Analytics.
- Scan the dashboard. Its summary fields include Last Schoology Access, Last Course Material Access, and Total Time Spent. Use the section filter if you need to narrow the dashboard to a particular section.
- Select a course member to open the detail report. Filter by material type as needed, then review the material title, last access, submission status and date, total submissions, and total time spent.
Course Analytics timestamps use the account’s time zone. The documentation says the dashboard updates hourly, so a recent action may not appear immediately. Confirm the time zone and allow for that refresh interval before interpreting a timestamp as evidence that something did—or did not—happen.
Review organization-wide activity
- Select Tools > Usage Analytics.
- Apply the available filters for schools or buildings, role type, and date range. Preset ranges are the last 7 days, last 30 days, and last 12 months; you can also set a custom range, up to a maximum of 13 months.
- Choose the view relevant to your question: active users, sessions, course materials created, or course-material submission and view counts.
In this report, active users are unique users within the selected period. Sessions include sign-ins, sign-outs, and returns after 30 minutes of inactivity. Mobile-app activity is included, but Managed Assessments (AMP) data is not; assessment activity and results are available in Assessment Reports. Usage Analytics data may be up to 24 hours old. For a specific student’s access or submissions in a course, use Course Analytics instead.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Administrators’ ability to open the report is constrained by the View School Analytics permission and the buildings associated with their access. If Usage Analytics is missing or shows a narrower scope than expected, ask your Schoology administrator to check the permission and building assignments. Feature visibility and data availability can also depend on the institution’s configuration.
Export Usage Analytics
A system administrator can export usage data captured after August 1, 2019. The export follows the date range selected in the report.

- Select Actions > Export Report.
- Choose a date range and select Next.
- Confirm by selecting Export Report.
The user who starts the export receives an email when it is ready. The download is a GZip archive and may automatically expand to a CSV. Each CSV row represents a user, an action, a day, the total count of that action on that day, and the UTC timestamp of the most recent matching action that day. The export covers web, mobile web, and the Schoology iOS and Android apps, across organization roles. See PowerSchool’s export instructions.

Course Analytics time is a measure of tracked material-view time, not a precise record of focused work. According to PowerSchool’s Course Analytics documentation and its Usage Analytics documentation, tracking begins when a course material is opened. Schoology checks activity every 60 seconds, counts no more than 15 minutes for one continuous view, and rounds down to the nearest whole minute.

- On the web: tracking is tied to the material tab being visible. It stops when the user switches tabs, minimizes the browser, or navigates away.
- In the mobile app: tracking stops when the app is backgrounded or closed.
- Attention is not verified: a visible browser tab can continue to count time even if the user is not actively paying attention.
PowerSchool’s documented example is that 2 minutes and 20 seconds appears as 00:00:02 in Course Analytics, while the Usage Analytics export represents it as 120 seconds. A continuous 20-minute view is counted as 15 minutes. These are the vendor’s examples, not independent measurements. The export’s time-spent values are in seconds but are also rounded down to whole minutes. Elapsed time shown in assessment grading may differ because Course Analytics applies the 15-minute cap.
Use time-spent figures as one activity signal, alongside access and submission details. They cannot establish that a student was focused, understood the material, or completed learning during the recorded time.

When data looks missing or inconsistent
- A recent action is absent from Course Analytics: allow for its documented hourly update, then check the account time zone and selected section.
- Organization activity appears delayed: Usage Analytics may be up to 24 hours behind.
- An administrator cannot open Usage Analytics or sees only part of the organization: have the Schoology administrator verify the View School Analytics permission and associated buildings.
- Assessment activity is not in Usage Analytics: Managed Assessments (AMP) data is excluded there; use Assessment Reports for assessment activity and results.
- Time spent seems lower than expected: whole-minute rounding, the 60-second activity checks, and the 15-minute continuous-view cap affect the reported total.
PowerSchool’s help pages do not display a publication date or product version. The navigation and behavior above reflect the documentation available for these features; an institution’s configuration may affect what a user can see.
