A schedule limit is not necessarily a run-count cap. In ChatGPT, the documented task limits govern how many tasks you can have or how often they can run; the official guidance does not establish a universal lifetime run cap for each scheduled agent. To control executions, account for scheduled starts, manual starts, automatic retries, and work already in progress—and verify the rules for the specific product and workspace.
What a run cap needs to control
A reliable cap is an operational rule for all ways work can begin, not just a limit on recurring schedule entries. Before setting one, decide what counts as a run:
- A scheduled start.
- A manual start, such as Run now.
- An automatic retry after a temporary execution error.
- A run that is already in progress when you pause the task.
The official ChatGPT documentation reviewed here does not specify whether every product’s cap accounting includes manual starts or retries, or whether a universal lifetime run-count setting exists. Do not treat a frequency limit or active-task limit as proof that an individual task will stop after a particular number of executions.

- Check the run history: Open the task’s Previous runs and review the outcomes before deciding whether another execution is needed.
- Pause future runs: Use Pause to suspend future scheduled and event-triggered runs. This prevents later starts, but it does not by itself stop work already underway.
- Check for an in-progress run: Handle it separately; do not assume pausing or deleting the task interrupts it.
- Verify any intended side effect: If the task was meant to send a message or change a file, check the destination before restarting it. A run may have completed some or all of its work even if its status or schedule does not make that clear.
- Resume only with a clear budget: If more work is required, establish how the next start will be counted and whether a manual restart could duplicate an earlier action.
These controls and labels are documented for shared team tasks. Exact behavior should be checked for the product and task type you use.

The three ways a run cap can leak
1. Manual starts bypass a schedule-only counter
Selecting Run now starts a run using the task’s saved instructions. If your counter tracks only scheduled occurrences, it can miss this work. The team-task guide confirms that a manual start is possible but does not say how every product accounts for it against a configured cap. Include manual starts in your own run log unless the relevant product documentation clearly says they are counted automatically.
2. Pausing does not necessarily stop work already running
For team tasks, Pause suspends future scheduled and event-triggered runs. The guide advises checking an in-progress run separately rather than relying on pause or delete to interrupt it. A pause can therefore stop future starts while leaving current work to finish. When a limit is reached, inspect the task’s status and deal with any active execution independently.

3. Automatic retries can add executions
Some temporary execution errors may trigger automatic retries. The documentation does not state a retry count or explain whether retries consume a configured run budget. Treat a retry as a possible additional execution: review Previous runs before manually trying again, and check for partial or completed side effects to avoid duplicate work.
What ChatGPT’s documented limits mean
OpenAI’s Scheduled tasks in ChatGPT help article describes plan-dependent active-task limits and scheduling cadence. It says eligible paid plans support recurring tasks as often as hourly; Free users can schedule a one-time task or a recurring task no more than once daily. These are limits on task quantity or frequency, not a stated lifetime execution budget for an individual task. The article also distinguishes ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks from Codex automations, so do not assume the same limits or accounting apply to both.

Limits may also depend on plan and workspace settings. For shared team tasks, workspace administrators manage applicable spending controls; personal scheduled-task limits do not establish spending limits for shared work. Ask the workspace administrator which controls apply to the task. The team-task guide also explains task management and run outcomes: Creating and managing team tasks in ChatGPT.

For a time-based schedule, Completed means the schedule has no future runs scheduled. It does not by itself prove that the last run successfully finished its intended work. Check Previous runs, then confirm the expected result at the destination—for example, whether the message was sent or the file changed.

Choose the control that matches the limit you need
| Control layer | What it addresses | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule cadence | When recurring runs are eligible to start. | A total number of executions allowed over the task’s lifetime. |
| Execution initiation | Whether work starts on schedule or through a manual action such as Run now. | That a schedule-only counter includes manual starts. |
| In-flight handling | Whether future starts are paused and whether a current run needs separate attention. | That pausing or deleting cancels work already underway. |
| Retry behavior | Possible re-execution after some temporary errors. | A documented retry count or a clear rule for charging retries to a run budget. |
| Budget governance | Applicable spending controls, including controls managed by workspace administrators for team tasks. | A personal task limit that automatically governs shared work. |
How to keep your own run count auditable
- Record each scheduled and manual start, and note retries when they appear in run history.
- When the cap is reached, pause future starts and inspect any in-progress execution.
- Check task history and the destination before retrying an action with external or file-changing effects.
- Confirm whether the exact product and task type provide a run-count cap, and ask how manual starts and retries affect it.
- For shared work, confirm applicable spending controls with the workspace administrator instead of relying on personal-plan limits.
