To translate an SCCM (Configuration Manager) error, first identify how the value is represented, convert negative decimal values to hexadecimal, and determine which component issued it. Then look up the code in that subsystem’s reference and check the log for the failed workflow. A translated message is a clue—not proof of the root cause.
How to translate an SCCM error code
- Preserve the original value. Copy it exactly, including a minus sign, any
0xprefix, and leading zeroes. Note where it appeared and what operation failed. - Convert negative decimal values to hexadecimal. Microsoft’s example converts
-2147012889toFFFFFFFF80072EE7. The leadingFFFFFFFFis sign extension; removing it leaves80072EE7. Do not remove a prefix without first recognizing what it represents. Microsoft’s error-code description procedure explains this conversion. - Use the prefix and failing component to find the likely code family. Prefixes are clues, not a definitive diagnosis; confirm the source before choosing a reference.
- Look up the code in the owning subsystem’s reference. A generic SCCM list may not cover errors issued by Windows, WMI, or another product.
- Check the relevant log around the event. Use the timestamp, component, workflow, and nearby messages to investigate why the operation failed.
What the code prefix can tell you
Microsoft describes these prefixes as typical family indicators. A matching prefix suggests where to look, but it does not prove which component emitted the value or explain the incident.
| Code clue | Likely family | Next step |
|---|---|---|
80072 |
Typically WinHTTP | Look up the WinHTTP error and investigate the network context of the failed workflow. |
8009 |
Typically CryptoAPI | Consult the relevant Windows error references and examine certificate context. Microsoft notes that Trace32 can display the code directly. |
800402 or 800403 |
Typically Configuration Manager | Use the error reference for the relevant component and version; check client or provider logs as appropriate. |
| Other values | Often Windows or third-party | Identify the emitting component before applying a generic lookup or repair. |
For example, after removing the sign-extension prefix from FFFFFFFF80072EE7, the remaining code is 80072EE7. Microsoft identifies it as typically WinHTTP; the trailing hexadecimal 2EE7 converts to decimal 12007, which maps to ERROR_WINHTTP_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED (“The server name cannot be resolved”). That message describes the reported error, but does not establish why name resolution failed in a particular incident. These mappings and conversion details are from Microsoft’s error-code procedure.
Choose the lookup by the error’s source
Configuration Manager can report errors from several layers. Match the reference to the failed workflow and the component that produced the value rather than relying on one catch-all list.

- WinHTTP or network-related value: For a likely
80072...code, use Microsoft’s conversion procedure and the WinHTTP error reference. Then inspect logs and evidence related to the affected workflow. - CryptoAPI or certificate-related value: For a likely
8009...code or a certificate failure, consult the applicable Windows error references and check the certificate context. The code alone does not identify the underlying certificate condition. - Configuration Manager-specific value: For a likely
800402...or800403...code—or a value known to come from Configuration Manager—use the reference for the relevant component and version. For provider errors, Microsoft points toSMSProv.log. - Windows system error: Use Microsoft’s Win32 system error-code reference. Win32 error values occupy
0x0000through0xFFFF; many have default message text, though protocols may expand or modify definitions. - WMI or SMS Provider exception: Check the exception details and, where applicable,
__ExtendedStatusorSMS_ExtendedStatus. The latter derives from__ExtendedStatus. In managed SMS Provider code,SmsQueryExceptioncarries Configuration Manager-specific exception information and may encapsulate WMI exceptions;SmsConnectionExceptionindicates a lost WMI connection. See Microsoft’s Configuration Manager SDK error-handling reference. - Application-installation error: Use Microsoft’s application-installation error reference, which distinguishes Configuration Manager, Windows, and WMI entries. Follow the reference for the relevant error source, such as Windows system codes or Windows Installer messages.
Do not confuse Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM) product errors with Windows API Configuration Manager device-configuration codes. A device’s ConfigManagerErrorCode belongs to the Windows API code domain; Microsoft’s SMS_Processor class reference identifies it as a Windows API Configuration Manager error code.
Which logs to check for the failed workflow
Software update scan failures
Start with WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log. The first records what Windows Update Agent returned; WindowsUpdate.log may contain additional detail from the agent. Microsoft’s software update scan troubleshooting guide groups some failures under missing or corrupted components and suggests starting with the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Use repair or reset steps only when the observed evidence supports them.

Provider or broader Configuration Manager incidents
For an SMS Provider error, check SMSProv.log alongside the exception or status details. For an incident spanning more than one component, use Microsoft’s Configuration Manager log-file reference and diagnostic package inventory to identify relevant client, site, Windows, or OS deployment logs. Match the log to the failing component and event time rather than collecting unrelated logs indiscriminately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the decoded message as a lead, not a diagnosis
A message such as “The server name cannot be resolved” narrows the type of failure, but the code does not establish whether the incident involved DNS, a proxy, an endpoint name, or another condition. Treat those as hypotheses to test against the surrounding log events and the affected workflow.

For developers retrieving system message text, Microsoft documents the FormatMessage API with FORMAT_MESSAGE_FROM_SYSTEM. This can retrieve a system message; it does not guarantee that every HRESULT or product-specific code has a useful system description. See the FormatMessage reference.
