Is the private video of Neal Mohan announcing YouTube monetization changes real? YouTube warned creators on March 4, 2025, that private videos claiming to be from the company—including an AI-generated video of CEO Neal Mohan—were phishing scams. A Guyana National CIRT alert later described how one campaign used the video to steer recipients to a fake Partner Program verification page and steal channel credentials. The documented activity dates to 2025; the available sources do not establish whether that exact campaign is still active.
Is the private video of Neal Mohan real?
No. YouTube’s official warning says phishers shared private videos that included an AI-generated video of CEO Neal Mohan announcing monetization changes. TeamYouTube’s notice states: “If a video is shared privately with you claiming to be from YouTube, the video is a phishing scam.”
The fact that a video appears to show a company executive is not proof that it is authentic. In this case, YouTube identified the private video itself as a phishing lure, not a genuine policy announcement. Read YouTube’s March 4, 2025 warning.

In an alert dated March 18, 2025, Guyana National CIRT described a campaign using private YouTube messages and emails. The messages presented the video as a critical monetization update and directed recipients to a fake YouTube Partner Program (YPP) verification page. According to the alert, attackers used credentials entered on the page to hijack channels, then repurposed some for cryptocurrency scam livestreams.

How to check a YouTube monetization update
- Verify it independently. Check YouTube’s official website, blog, or official creator channels for major policy announcements. Do not treat a private video or an urgent message as confirmation.
- Do not follow the message’s sign-in link. Avoid links in unsolicited messages about urgent policy or monetization changes, and do not enter your password on a page reached through them.
- Use official support routes. If you need to check your account or a policy claim, navigate to YouTube through a trusted route rather than the message.
What to do if you clicked the link or entered your password
If you entered credentials, or your channel shows activity you did not authorize, act promptly using YouTube’s official account-recovery support workflow. The CIRT alert points affected users to YouTube’s support assistant and recommends reporting suspicious activity through YouTube’s official help channels.
