Can your SBA loan be forgiven? It depends on the exact loan. Existing PPP loans may qualify for forgiveness. COVID-19 EIDL loans must be repaid, although a separate EIDL Advance does not. Ordinary SBA 7(a) loans are generally repaid under the borrower’s note; there is no general forgiveness route described in SBA’s standard 7(a) guidance.

This guide covers U.S. SBA programs. Check the original note, account statement, or SBA account first: “SBA loan” does not identify one set of forgiveness rules. A payment reduction or deferment is not the same as eliminating a balance.

Which SBA program do you have?

Program or instrument Can the balance be forgiven? Where to start
Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan Potentially. Eligibility depends on the loan, use of funds, employment facts, application, and review. SBA PPP loan forgiveness guidance or the lender that handled the loan.
COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) No. SBA says COVID-19 EIDL loans are not forgivable and must be repaid. SBA COVID-era programs and the SBA Loan Portal.
EIDL Advance The Advance is distinct from the EIDL loan and does not have to be repaid. Check the account and award records to confirm you received an Advance rather than a loan.
Ordinary SBA 7(a) loan SBA’s standard program guidance describes repayment, not a general borrower forgiveness option. Your note and the lender or servicing center on your account.

How does PPP forgiveness work?

PPP stopped accepting new loans on May 31, 2021, but that did not automatically forgive existing loans or prevent eligible borrowers from applying. Borrowers can apply through SBA’s Direct Forgiveness Portal regardless of loan size, or through the lender that handled the loan. SBA says you may apply after using all the proceeds for which you seek forgiveness.

Eligibility depends on how the funds were used

Forgiveness is not automatic or guaranteed. SBA’s guidance describes eligible payroll and specified nonpayroll costs, employee-retention criteria, and a covered period of 8 to 24 weeks. The relevant facts and requirements depend on the specific loan and application; follow the applicable form instructions rather than assuming that receiving a PPP loan makes its full balance forgivable. See SBA’s PPP forgiveness guidance.

Know both the application deadline and payment timing

SBA’s current guidance gives a deadline of up to five years from the date SBA issued the loan number. Separately, if you do not apply within 10 months after the last day of your covered period, payments stop being deferred and you must begin paying the lender. The five-year application window is not a reason to assume payments will remain deferred while you wait. Confirm your covered-period end date, payment status, and applicable deadline with your lender or portal.

Choose the form and prepare the records it requires

  • For loans of $150,000 or less, Form 3508S does not require additional documentation to be submitted with the application. Keep the supporting records in case of review or audit.
  • For loans over $150,000, Forms 3508 or 3508EZ require supporting records. Use the instructions for the form that applies to your loan.

Before submitting, locate your SBA loan number, covered-period dates, lender, and relevant loan records; reconcile the amount requested against eligible use of funds; save the submission confirmation; and monitor the application. Continue required payments unless your lender or account status confirms otherwise. The $150,000 threshold and form requirements are stated in SBA’s guidance, last updated October 3, 2024.

Can a COVID-19 EIDL loan be forgiven?

No. SBA states of COVID-19 EIDL loans: “These loans are not forgivable and must be repaid.” That statement applies to the loan, not to a separate EIDL Advance, which does not have to be repaid. Eligible use of EIDL loan proceeds does not, by itself, convert the loan into a forgivable one. The pandemic EIDL program is closed to new applications and increase requests: SBA stopped accepting applications on January 1, 2022, and closed the original RAPID application portal on May 16, 2022.

Temporary payment assistance is not forgiveness

SBA’s current COVID-era guidance says eligible existing EIDL borrowers may request a 50% payment reduction for six months. The listed conditions include that the loan is current and less than 90 days past due when requested, the business remains open and operating, the borrower and owners are not in active bankruptcy, and the problem is a temporary cash-flow difficulty. Interest is not waived: it continues to accrue during the reduced-payment period and increases the eventual balance or balloon payment. Check the current terms and your account before requesting assistance.

To manage an existing loan, verify whether you have an EIDL loan or an Advance, review the note and latest statement, and confirm the balance and next due date in the SBA Loan Portal and payment guidance. Contact the COVID EIDL Servicing Center for account-specific servicing questions. The original note, statements, payment history, and records supporting a servicing request are useful to have available.

Are SBA 7(a) loans eligible for forgiveness?

For an ordinary 7(a) loan, do not apply PPP forgiveness rules. SBA describes 7(a) as a program that guarantees loans made by lenders to eligible small businesses; that guarantee is not a general promise to forgive the borrower’s debt. Most 7(a) term loans are repaid monthly with principal and interest, generally from business cash flow. Fixed-rate installments remain level; variable-rate payment amounts can change. See the SBA 7(a) program overview.

For your actual payment schedule, payoff amount, or a hardship or modification request, review the note and contact the lender or servicing center identified on your account. SBA’s general payment page says borrowers with 7(a) loans generally contact their lender; portal payments are available only for SBA-purchased, SBA-serviced 7(a) loans. A loan in a special servicing or default process may require account-specific guidance, so identify the exact loan and status before relying on general program information.

Where should you check your account or ask for help?

  • PPP forgiveness: Use the SBA Direct Forgiveness Portal or contact the PPP lender. SBA’s contact page directs direct-portal applicants to its PPP forgiveness assistance line; other PPP questions go to the lender.
  • COVID-19 EIDL: Use the SBA Loan Portal for account status, statements, and payment actions; contact the COVID EIDL Servicing Center about servicing.
  • 7(a): Contact the lender or servicing center shown on the account statement. Check whether your loan is SBA-purchased and SBA-serviced before assuming the general payment portal applies.

SBA says it accepts electronic payments only from October 1, 2025 onward; confirm the payment channel for your account before sending money. SBA Resource Partners—including SCORE, Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers, and Veterans Business Outreach Centers—can provide small-business counseling, but they do not replace an account decision by the lender or SBA or individualized legal and tax advice.
