YouTube calls its short-form videos Shorts, not Reels. To get a video file, you can download a Short you uploaded through YouTube Studio on a computer or through the YouTube or YouTube Studio app on Android. For someone else’s Short, YouTube’s supported download option—where available—is offline playback inside the YouTube app, not a file saved to your gallery.
Choose the right way to save the Short

Download a Short you uploaded
YouTube documents two ways to save your own Short. The computer workflow downloads through YouTube Studio; the Android workflows offer a “Save to device” option. YouTube Help does not specify an iPhone or iPad creator-download workflow in the steps below.
On a computer with YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content.
- Find the Short, open its menu, and choose Download.
YouTube Help says the downloaded MP4 is 720p or 360p depending on the video size; it does not promise the original upload resolution.
On Android in the YouTube app
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Your videos, then open the Shorts tab.
- Find the Short, open its menu, and tap Save to device.
On Android in the YouTube Studio app
- Open the YouTube Studio app and select Content.
- Choose Shorts.
- Open the menu for the Short and choose Save to device.
Why “Save to device” or “Download” may be unavailable
YouTube Help lists several restrictions on downloads of your own uploads. The option may be unavailable if the video was removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a preapproved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times in the past 24 hours. YouTube’s stated limit is five downloads per video per day.

Watch someone else’s Short offline
YouTube does not let you use the creator-download workflow for another user’s video. Instead, eligible videos may have an in-app offline download option. YouTube Premium members can download eligible videos in supported locations; YouTube also offers mobile downloads for certain videos in selected countries and regions. Availability depends on both location and video eligibility.
Downloaded videos are accessed in the YouTube app. They are not exported as ordinary files for use in your gallery or another app. YouTube may require the app to reconnect periodically to check whether a downloaded video remains available.

Third-party downloaders and sharing
A third-party downloader is not the official YouTube method. YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading or other use of content except as specifically permitted by the service, with prior written permission from YouTube and, where applicable, the rights holders, or as allowed by law. The legal result can depend on jurisdiction and circumstances.

When an SD card helps—and when it does not
YouTube documents an SD-card destination for eligible offline downloads on phones or tablets that support SD cards. A compatible microSD card is relevant if you want to store offline viewing downloads and your device supports expandable storage. It is not required to save your own Short with Save to device, and it does not turn an in-app offline download into an exportable video file.

YouTube treats music added through Shorts creation tools and its audio library differently from songs added outside those tools, which may be subject to standard copyright claims. The listed creator-download restriction refers to a preapproved audio track; the presence of music alone does not establish that every Short cannot be downloaded.
