Sauce founder Manu Chandra expects niche consumer brands and midsize acquisitions to become more common over the next five years. Separately, startups collecting real-world data to train robots and other Physical AI systems are discussing an industry body that could set shared worker and site standards. The proposal is an early-stage industry discussion—not a government regulation or an established standard.

What Manu Chandra expects for consumer-brand exits

Chandra, founder and managing partner of consumer-focused venture capital firm Sauce, told The Economic Times: “Five years from now, we will see many more smaller niche brands getting developed and many more frequent midsize acquisitions happening.” This is his forecast about the next five years, not a tally of announced transactions.

He framed acquisitions as a way for companies to add complementary capabilities, increase brand scale and gain market share. The report places that outlook alongside Sauce’s exit from Innovist: it estimates Sauce received ₹500–550 crore from L’Oréal’s acquisition after investing ₹50–55 crore. Both amounts are estimates attributed to the report, not independently verified transaction figures.

Chandra’s stated scale expectations

Chandra said a consumer company generating ₹100 crore in revenue no longer excites Sauce. He also said leading consumer brands with revenue of ₹1,500–2,000 crore could potentially support valuations of ₹10,000–12,000 crore. These are his stated investment threshold and valuation expectations, not universal benchmarks or market averages.

What the proposed Physical AI standards body could do

Startups that collect data in real-world environments to train robots and other Physical AI systems are reported to be in early discussions about forming an industry body. The Economic Times names Human Archive, Humyn Labs, Neo Cambrian, Modal Robotics and Aura ML among companies collecting data for robot and Physical AI training; the report does not establish that each is a member of a proposed body.

The proposed effort could address common expectations for the people doing data-collection work and for access to operating environments. The report describes possible standards covering:

Is Physical AI data collection regulated in India?

The October 6, 2026 Economic Times report describes early discussions about an industry body; it does not report an enacted regulation, a formed association or a published standard. The proposed common rules should therefore be understood as a possible voluntary industry effort, not an existing legal requirement. The report does not establish what specific laws apply to a particular data-collection operation.

How to read the two stories

The consumer-exit outlook and the Physical AI standards discussion are separate items in the same report, not developments shown to be connected. Chandra’s comments concern expected consumer-brand acquisitions; the standards proposal concerns working conditions and access for real-world AI data collection.

The report also cites a MarketsandMarkets projection that the global Physical AI market could grow from $1.5 billion in 2026 to $15.2 billion by 2032. Those figures are a forecast, not a measurement of the market’s current size.
