The Satechi USB-C Slim Dock for 24-inch iMac combines front-access ports with an empty M.2 SSD enclosure in a low-profile, color-matched design. It fits only 24-inch iMacs with M1, M3 or M4 chips; you supply the SSD, and the dock’s USB-A ports transfer data but do not charge devices.

What the Satechi USB-C Slim Dock adds to an iMac

This is an iMac-specific expansion dock, not a universal stand or a self-contained storage drive. It connects to the iMac over USB-C and sits along the base, bringing commonly used connections to the front while providing a bay for a separately purchased M.2 drive. Satechi sells silver model ST-UCISDS and blue model ST-UCISDB. Satechi’s product page describes it as designed exclusively for 2021 and 2023 24-inch iMac models; its compatibility article also explicitly lists M1, M3 and M4 24-inch iMacs.

The appeal is the combination: port access and an M.2 enclosure in a single, low-profile accessory. The key trade-offs are narrow iMac compatibility, a 10Gbps maximum for the dock’s fast data connections, and the extra cost of an SSD that is not included.

Which iMac models fit?

Satechi lists compatibility with 24-inch iMacs powered by M1, M3 or M4. It will not fit 2020-and-earlier iMacs. Check your iMac’s screen size and chip before buying: matching the color or having a USB-C port is not enough to establish physical compatibility.

There is a wording difference between Satechi’s sources: the product page says “Designed exclusively for 2021 and 2023 24-inch iMac models,” while the current support article names M1, M3 and M4 24-inch iMacs. For the M4 question, the support article is explicit: it lists the M4 24-inch iMac as compatible.

Ports and data speeds

Connection Quantity Published speed or function
USB-C host connection 1 Connects the dock to the iMac
USB-C data port 1 Up to 10Gbps
USB-A data port 1 Up to 10Gbps
USB 2.0 ports 2 Up to 480Mbps each
SD and microSD slots 1 each UHS-I
M.2 slot 1 NVMe or SATA storage; up to 10Gbps

The 10Gbps figure is the published maximum for the dock’s faster data connections, including the M.2 slot; it is not a claim that every attached device will transfer at that rate. USB 2.0 ports are much slower and are better suited to peripherals that do not need fast storage transfers.

Does the dock include an SSD?

No. The M.2 bay is an enclosure, and you must buy a compatible drive separately. Satechi supports M.2 2242, 2260 and 2280 NVMe or M.2 SATA drives up to 2TB. Drives with heatsinks are incompatible, so check the drive’s length, interface, capacity and physical profile before ordering. Satechi’s support article confirms that the NVMe or M.2 SATA drive is not included and that SSDs with heatsinks are not compatible.

Because total cost includes the drive, compare the dock’s price plus the SSD you intend to install with the cost of a hub and external SSD purchased separately. The integrated bay keeps storage with the dock, but it does not make the storage part of the box.

How to install an M.2 drive

The included box contains the dock, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, thermal pad, an extra SSD silicone plug and a manual. The quick guide gives this installation sequence:

  1. Connect the included cable to the dock’s HOST port.
  2. Remove the enclosure cover.
  3. Seat the compatible SSD in the M.2 slot.
  4. Apply the thermal pad.
  5. Secure the drive with the silicone plug or rubber stopper.
  6. Replace the magnetic cover.

Use a drive that fits the listed lengths and has no heatsink; a physically incompatible drive will not become suitable through a different installation method.

Will the dock charge USB devices?

No charging function is documented for the USB-A ports: they are data-only. Satechi also says they do not support an Apple SuperDrive and recommends connecting only one bus-powered device at a time. Do not buy this dock expecting its USB-A port to charge a phone or power multiple bus-powered accessories.

Size, warranty and current price

The dock measures 27.9 cm long, 11.4 cm wide and 1 cm high, weighs 10.6 oz, and includes a 42 cm cable. Satechi’s US store lists a two-year warranty and 30-day returns. When checked for this article, the US product page displayed $104.99, reduced from $149.99; price and availability can change, so confirm them on the current product page. The same page showed a 4.5/5 rating from 62 customer reviews; that is a merchant-hosted rating, not an independent performance test.

Who should consider it?

  • A good fit: owners of a compatible 24-inch M1, M3 or M4 iMac who want front-access connections and an integrated place for a separately purchased M.2 drive.
  • Consider another option: anyone with an earlier or differently sized iMac, anyone who needs USB-A charging or Apple SuperDrive support, or anyone who needs storage faster than the dock’s published 10Gbps ceiling.
  • Compare the full setup: against a generic USB-C hub or clamp-style iMac hub, weigh physical fit and visual integration, port mix and speed, whether an M.2 enclosure is built in, and the total cost after adding an SSD. A generic hub may suit more computers; this dock’s differentiator is its iMac-specific footprint and storage bay.
