Short answer: SAST examines your source or compiled code, SCA examines third-party and open-source components, and DAST probes a running application from the outside. They answer different security questions, run most naturally at different workflow stages, and have different blind spots. A team building a typical application with proprietary code, dependencies, and an exposed web interface will usually need all three, combined with targeted manual testing.
What SAST, DAST and SCA each examine
The abbreviations describe the object being tested rather than competing names for the same scan. Selecting the right method starts with identifying whether you need visibility into code you wrote, components you imported, or behavior that is observable in a deployed application.
Static application security testing (SAST)
SAST analyzes source code or compiled code without running the application. It can inspect a changed file, a pull request, or a build artifact and look for insecure coding patterns, data-flow problems and other code-level weaknesses. OWASP Foundation describes these tools as helping “analyze source code or compiled versions of code to help find security flaws.”

That early timing is useful when a defect is still inexpensive to correct. A finding still needs to be understood in its code context: scanners can lack the application’s runtime configuration, may not understand a custom validation routine, and can report a pattern that is safe in a particular path.

Dynamic application security testing (DAST)
DAST tests a running application through its exposed interface. The scanner sends requests and examines responses, much as an external attacker would, without requiring access to the source. OWASP’s developer guidance states that DAST tools “do not have access to the source code and therefore detect vulnerabilities by actually performing attacks.”
This view can reveal problems that only appear when components, configuration, routing, authentication and server behavior operate together. It can also verify what an external client can actually reach. A DAST scan is limited to the routes, parameters, roles and workflows it can discover and exercise; it cannot automatically reason about every business rule or an unvisited path.
Software composition analysis (SCA)
SCA inventories third-party and open-source components and assesses their associated risks. It can identify known vulnerable versions, outdated packages, license restrictions and transitive dependencies that are pulled in by another library. The quality of the result depends on accurately identifying the components and matching them with current vulnerability and license information.

SCA is not a review of your original application logic and it is not a test of the deployed service. A component can be free of a known vulnerability while your code uses it unsafely, and a vulnerable package may be unreachable in a particular product. Inventory, reachability and remediation context matter more than a simple vulnerability total.
Side-by-side comparison
| Method | Primary target | Natural workflow point | Typical findings | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAST | First-party source or compiled code | Coding, commit, pull request or build | Insecure patterns and code-level flaws | Does not observe actual runtime behavior; findings require code-context validation |
| DAST | A running application through its interface | Deployed test or pre-release environment | Issues observable through requests, responses and runtime behavior | Cannot inspect source and misses routes, workflows or logic it cannot reach or understand |
| SCA | Direct and transitive third-party components | Build and continuing dependency management | Known vulnerabilities, old versions and license concerns | Does not replace first-party code review or live-application testing |
Where each test belongs in the development lifecycle
OWASP materials commonly map SAST to commit-time checks, SCA to the build stage and DAST to the deploy stage. These are useful defaults, not exclusive slots. Running SAST during a build, generating an SCA report on every pull request or scanning a deployed preview with DAST can all be sensible when the feedback speed and environment are appropriate.
| Lifecycle point | Useful activity | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Local coding and commit | Fast SAST checks on changed code | Developers can fix a flaw before it is merged |
| Pull request and build | Broader SAST analysis plus SCA inventory and policy checks | The build has a reproducible code and dependency set to assess |
| Deploy to an isolated test environment | Authenticated and unauthenticated DAST | The application is running with realistic routing and configuration |
| Release and operations | Re-scan after meaningful changes and monitor dependencies | A previously clean artifact can become exposed through a new component, configuration or route |
Do not treat a stage label as a guarantee. A SAST finding may be discovered late, an SCA alert may require action immediately after a new advisory, and DAST can be run against a temporary environment for a feature branch. The important distinction is the evidence each method uses.

What the three methods can and cannot tell you
SAST: strong code visibility, limited environmental context
- Can trace many inputs through first-party code and flag dangerous operations or missing protections.
- Can identify a file, function or line where remediation belongs.
- Can run before the application is deployable.
- Cannot prove that production configuration, authentication boundaries or runtime integrations are secure.
- Can produce false positives when the analyzer cannot understand framework behavior or a project-specific sanitizer.
Use the code location and data flow in a SAST report to reproduce the path, confirm exploitability and choose a fix. Suppress a finding only with a documented reason and an owner for revisiting the decision.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DAST: realistic external behavior, incomplete coverage
- Can observe what a remote client receives, including response behavior affected by configuration and deployed components.
- Can test reachable forms, parameters, headers, sessions and API endpoints when they are configured in the scan.
- Can expose discrepancies between intended controls and the behavior of the running service.
- Cannot see dead code, internal trust boundaries or a route it never discovers.
- Automated probing does not replace human review of business logic, race conditions or unusual authorization workflows.
OWASP’s Developer Guide notes that manual assessment can find business-logic errors, race conditions and some zero-day vulnerabilities that automated tools may miss. Keep DAST in a controlled environment, especially when active tests could create, alter or delete data.
SCA: component intelligence, dependency and matching limits
- Can create an inventory of direct and transitive packages and compare versions with public vulnerability records.
- Can highlight packages that are outdated or subject to license restrictions.
- Can support a repeatable upgrade or replacement process when a component advisory is published.
- Depends on correctly identifying packages, versions and sometimes the ecosystem’s naming conventions.
- Does not establish that a vulnerable function is reachable, nor that your own code uses a safe pattern.
OWASP emphasizes that component age, function, quantity and license can matter alongside known vulnerabilities. A high-severity advisory in an unused development-only package may demand a different response from a lower-severity issue in a library handling untrusted production input.
How to decide which tests you need
Start with the risk question rather than a product feature list.
- Need feedback on code your team writes? Prioritize SAST at the editor, commit or pull-request boundary.
- Need to know what you ship from other projects? Add SCA to dependency resolution and the build, including transitive packages.
- Need to know what an external client can exploit? Run DAST against a representative, isolated deployment.
- Have all three surfaces? Combine the methods and route each finding to the team that can fix it.
| Situation | First priority | Reason | Next addition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small service with substantial proprietary code and few dependencies | SAST | Most immediate visibility is in the code being changed | SCA for the remaining packages, then DAST before release |
| Application assembled from many open-source packages | SCA | Inventory and advisory matching are foundational | SAST for integration code and DAST for the running service |
| Legacy web application with little source access | DAST | External behavior can be tested without a complete codebase | Obtain an inventory for SCA and add SAST as code becomes available |
| Public API handling sensitive data | DAST plus SAST | You need both observable authorization behavior and code-level review | SCA for every runtime and build dependency |
| Internal tool with no network-facing deployment | SAST and SCA | Code and component risk remain even with a limited external surface | DAST if a test deployment exposes meaningful interfaces |
Architecture, languages and frameworks, dependency ecosystems, deployment frequency and the team’s ability to triage findings should determine the order. A test that produces reports nobody can investigate is not a mature control; start with a scope that can be fixed and expanded.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A practical combined workflow
- Define ownership and scope. List repositories, deployable services, supported languages, package managers, public interfaces and data sensitivity. Assign a code owner for SAST findings, a dependency owner for SCA alerts and an application owner for DAST results.
- Establish a baseline. Run an initial scan and classify findings as confirmed, false positive, accepted risk or needing investigation. Record why an item is suppressed rather than hiding it without context.
- Shift fast checks left. Run a focused SAST check on changed code and an SCA check whenever dependency manifests or lockfiles change. Keep these checks fast enough for normal review.
- Scan the build output. Generate the complete component inventory, including transitive dependencies when the tool can identify them. Apply documented policies for severity, exploitability, license and package age.
- Deploy a representative test environment. Use the same routing, authentication configuration and relevant integrations as the release path, while isolating test data and destructive operations.
- Exercise the application with DAST. Provide the scanner the routes, API definitions and test accounts it needs. Run unauthenticated and role-specific scans where access boundaries matter.
- Triage across evidence types. Correlate a code finding with a reachable endpoint or a dependency alert with actual use. Do not merge reports into a single score that hides the different evidence.
- Fix and verify. Update code, upgrade or replace a component, or change configuration. Re-run the relevant method and, where behavior changed, repeat the other method that can observe the affected surface.
- Review exceptions. Give every accepted risk an owner, rationale, expiry or review date and compensating control. Revisit exceptions after dependency, architecture or threat changes.
Implementing SAST effectively
Choose the right input and feedback point
Confirm whether a scanner analyzes source, bytecode or another compiled representation, and whether it understands the project’s languages and frameworks. Use a quick changed-code analysis for pull requests and a broader build analysis for scheduled or release checks. The two reports serve different latency needs.

Make findings actionable
Require a path to the affected code, the data flow or rule that triggered the result, the potential impact and a remediation explanation. Developers should be able to reproduce the issue and distinguish a real flaw from a safe wrapper or framework convention. Establish severity and ownership rules before turning findings into merge gates.
Control noise without losing coverage
Start with high-confidence rules and a small set of critical sinks, then expand. Document project-specific sanitizers and trusted boundaries so the analyzer can reduce repeat false positives. Measure unresolved findings by age and owner rather than treating every warning as equally urgent.
Implementing DAST safely and completely
Prepare the environment
Scan a non-production deployment with test accounts and disposable data. Confirm that the environment contains the same authentication flows, reverse proxies, feature flags and important integrations as the release candidate. Define which actions are safe to perform and block destructive endpoints if the scanner cannot be constrained.
Provide application knowledge
A crawler cannot test a route it cannot discover. Supply API descriptions, seed URLs, documented workflows and credentials for each relevant role. Include both logged-out and logged-in coverage, and verify that the scan actually reached the endpoints and parameters that matter.
Investigate results manually
Reproduce a suspected issue with a controlled request, determine which role and preconditions are required, and trace the result to the responsible service or configuration. Review authorization sequences, state changes and timing-sensitive operations manually; these are areas where automated DAST coverage is inherently incomplete.
Implementing SCA as an ongoing process
Build a trustworthy inventory
Collect manifests and lockfiles for every build, and include the versions brought in indirectly by direct dependencies. An inventory should distinguish runtime, build-time and test-only components so that triage reflects actual exposure. Retain the inventory with the build record to show what was shipped.

Match advisories and licenses
SCA tools commonly map a package to an identifier and cross-reference public vulnerability records. Matching errors can occur when names or versions are ambiguous, so validate an important alert against the component’s official release information. Track license obligations separately from vulnerability severity; a package can be safe from a known exploit yet incompatible with a product’s distribution terms.
Example: OWASP Dependency-Check
OWASP Dependency-Check is a command-line SCA example that identifies third-party libraries and checks for publicly disclosed vulnerabilities. Its documentation describes mapping dependencies to CPE identifiers and cross-referencing vulnerability records, with integrations for Ant, command-line use, Gradle, Jenkins and Maven. It is an example of dependency vulnerability scanning, not a substitute for every software-supply-chain, license or reachability requirement.
Set an upgrade decision process
For each alert, identify the affected component and version, whether it is present in a shipped artifact, whether the vulnerable functionality is used, the available fixed version and the compatibility risk of upgrading. If an immediate upgrade is impossible, record a compensating control and a review date instead of permanently dismissing the alert.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using SAST as a security certificate
A clean static report means the analyzed code did not trigger the configured rules. It does not show how production settings, integrations or authorization behave. Add runtime testing and human review for those questions.

Counting SCA alerts instead of managing components
A vulnerability count can rise because an inventory became more complete, not because the product became less secure. Separate direct from transitive components, runtime from development packages, and confirmed exposure from a merely affected version.
Running DAST against an empty or inaccurate environment
A scan that cannot authenticate, reach key routes or exercise realistic workflows provides little evidence. Fix seed URLs, credentials, API definitions and role coverage, then inspect the scan log for the paths actually tested.
Blocking every build on every finding
Uncalibrated gates encourage blanket suppression or bypasses. Gate on a small, documented set of high-confidence conditions, provide a rapid exception path and expand only as triage capacity improves.

Ignoring business logic
Automated methods are pattern and behavior checks, not a complete model of business intent. Review authorization transitions, financial or data-changing workflows, race conditions and abuse cases with people who understand the product.
Failing to rescan after a fix
Confirm that a code change removed the path, that an upgrade produced the intended component version and that a configuration fix changed the externally observable behavior. A ticket marked closed without verification is not evidence of remediation.
How to judge coverage and maturity
- Every deployable service has an owner, a documented repository and a current dependency inventory.
- Pull requests receive timely SAST and dependency feedback appropriate to the changed files.
- Build records retain the component set used to create each release.
- Pre-release DAST covers important unauthenticated and authenticated routes in an isolated environment.
- Findings have severity rationale, ownership, due dates or an explicit accepted-risk record.
- Fixes are re-tested, and scan scope is reviewed when architecture or deployment changes.
These checks describe process coverage, not a guarantee that no vulnerability exists. The objective is to obtain different, trustworthy views of risk and make the resulting work sustainable.
OWASP guidance and version context
OWASP provides guidance for source-code analysis, dynamic testing, component analysis and web security testing. Its Web Security Testing Guide project lists version 4.2 as an available versioned release and identifies version 5.0 as in development; consult the current project materials when aligning test cases with a particular edition. The guidance is useful for planning coverage, but it does not turn an automated scan into a complete assessment.

SAST tells you whether your code contains recognizable security weaknesses, SCA tells you what risks arrive through the components you use, and DAST tells you what a running application exposes through its interfaces. Choose the method that matches the question, place it where its evidence is available, and combine the three when your application has all three surfaces. Keep manual review, sound triage and verified remediation in the program because no one of these tests can establish that an application is secure by itself.
