In xbill’s September 18, 2026 Sanity Challenge project, an agent proposes watering fields, a human Cabinet approves or rejects the proposal, and Sanity Workflows moves approved fields through watering, growth, and harvest. The project’s custom picture-button “Kiosk” is an inventive way to explore friendlier content editing—but its published timing test involved an agent, not non-programmer people. In that pilot, the regular Sanity Studio was fastest on all three tasks.
What is the Sanity project?
Inspired by Idiocracy, the project turns Joe’s plan to water crops with water rather than Brawndo into a fictional agriculture-management workflow. As author xbill puts it: “In Idiocracy the crops are dying because every field is watered with Brawndo. It’s got electrolytes. Joe’s plan is to water them. With water. Like from the toilet.”
The agent can report on the fields, create a proposal, and submit it. It cannot approve its own proposal. A human Cabinet member makes that decision. Approval sends fields into watering and then onward to growing and harvest; rejection leads toward a dust-bowl outcome. The project’s interfaces are a custom picture-button Kiosk, the standard Sanity Studio, and Markdown files edited on GitHub. xbill’s project write-up describes the implementation and its pilot measurements.
How does the workflow work?
The author models the proposal’s progress as workflow state rather than treating the process as a lone status field. Its stages include petition, Cabinet review, watering, growing, and harvest, with a dust-bowl outcome for failure. Sanity’s Workflows overview describes workflows in terms of definitions, instances, stages, activities, and effects: the definition describes the process, while an instance tracks a particular run through it.

In this project, vote tallies are calculated with GROQ’s count(). A vote ID combines the citizen and field, so a citizen’s later vote replaces that citizen’s earlier vote for the same field. Those are project-specific implementation choices, not general rules for Sanity voting systems.
Does a workflow approval enforce access control?
No. A workflow can organize a process and check whether a proposed action follows its stages, but those checks are not a security boundary against a client that can write directly to the Content Lake. Sanity’s documentation on workflow security, updated October 1, 2026, says that the Content Lake is the enforcement point: dataset access control must prevent unauthorized writes. In other words, do not rely on a workflow guard alone to stop a determined client from bypassing approval.

Was the picture-button Kiosk faster than Sanity Studio?
Not in the reported agent-only pilot. The author timed one participant—an agent—on three tasks, with three runs per interface. All 27 timed edits were reported correct (9 of 9 for each interface). The table shows the author-reported median completion times in seconds; lower is faster.
| Interface | Water a field | Add a citizen | Amend a proposal | Participant and scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sanity Studio | 24.8 s | 16.8 s | 37.6 s | Agent A1; author-reported pilot, three runs per task |
| Picture-button Kiosk | 26.4 s | 25.6 s | 41.4 s | Agent A1; author-reported pilot, three runs per task |
| GitHub Markdown | 37.2 s | 41.2 s | 46.2 s | Agent A1; author-reported pilot, three runs per task |
These are small, project-author-reported timings, not a general usability study. The agent’s times include model decision time, and the interfaces were tested in Kiosk, Studio, then GitHub order, so first-run learning could affect the comparison. The figures establish neither that Studio is easier for people nor that the Kiosk is faster for non-programmers.

Has a non-programmer tried it?
Not in the published test. The article identifies a test with someone who has never used Git as future work, so the Kiosk’s human usability remains unmeasured. The existing results answer how one agent performed on those tasks—not whether people unfamiliar with developer tools can use the interface comfortably or accurately.

The author’s September 2026 setup is a dated project snapshot, not a list of current Sanity requirements. It used a Sanity Growth-trial project, Sanity Studio 6, two workspaces sharing one schema, joes-plan v1, Workflows packages at 0.33.0 early access, a Next.js 16 front end using next-sanity, and Sanity Functions plus Cloud Scheduler for runtime work. Sanity’s App SDK overview describes building custom content applications and workflows; it provides broader product context, not evidence that the Kiosk has been tested with human users.
