For a custom Next.js frontend, Sanity is the stronger starting point when you need structured content, developer-controlled queries, and an integrated draft-preview and visual-editing workflow. Webflow can supply CMS content to a separate Next.js app through its APIs, but its Designer is not that app’s frontend, and the available official material does not establish an equivalent Next.js preview-and-editing workflow. Choose by testing your actual content model, editor tasks, freshness needs, and API usage—not by treating the platforms as interchangeable.

What differs when Next.js is the frontend?

Sanity documents a Next.js-specific integration through next-sanity, including content queries, Draft Mode, live updates, and visual editing. Webflow documents CMS APIs that a separate application can consume. That makes both relevant to a Next.js project, but the integration evidence is not symmetrical: Sanity describes the editorial loop inside a Next.js setup, while Webflow’s official materials establish API capabilities rather than a matching Next.js preview-and-editing recipe.

The practical distinction is between an editorial system designed to connect with a custom frontend and a hosted platform whose CMS data can be delivered to one. In either case, the frontend still needs to render the content, resolve routes, and meet the project’s publishing and freshness requirements.

How do the content models and queries fit?

Sanity for custom structured content

The next-sanity toolkit includes GROQ query helpers and typed-query support, along with Sanity client configuration for Next.js caching and Portable Text rendering support. This is a fit to investigate when content has custom structures or relationships and developers need control over how the frontend queries it. These capabilities do not eliminate schema and query design work.

Webflow for API-delivered CMS content

Webflow’s CMS REST API supports programmatic CMS operations, and its content-delivery APIs serve CMS data for read-only delivery. A Next.js application can consume that data through an API-based architecture. Confirm that the actual CMS schema and relevant endpoints can represent and deliver the project’s content; the existence of an API alone does not establish that every data model or workflow fits.

What does editing and previewing look like?

Sanity: a documented visual-editing loop

Sanity’s App Router guide describes a workflow in which the Studio Presentation Tool loads the frontend in an iframe, a Next.js route enables Draft Mode, and the frontend exposes draft content. Content Source Maps are encoded with stega metadata, <VisualEditing /> draws click-to-edit overlays, and live components update the preview when content changes. The guide calls this a setup for “visual editing between Sanity Studio and a Next.js App Router frontend,” including Draft Mode and Live Content.

This is an integration, not a switch that turns on automatically. The preview route configured in Studio must match the app; document-to-URL resolvers must produce real frontend routes; stega.studioUrl must point to Studio; and CORS must allow the frontend origin with credentials. Draft access also requires a Viewer-permission API token.

Webflow: verify the separate frontend workflow

Webflow’s API documentation supports using CMS data outside the Designer, but the official material identified here does not establish a current, equivalent guide for Next.js draft preview, visual editing, or editor-to-page overlays. Do not assume that the Designer will preview or edit the separate Next.js rendering in the same way as Sanity’s documented Presentation Tool workflow.

Before committing, test the exact authoring tasks that matter: create or update a representative item, preview the resulting Next.js route before publication if required, publish it, and confirm how quickly the app receives the change. The evidence supports Sanity’s described workflow; it is not enough to make a fair blanket claim that one product’s editors are faster or better.

How do API delivery, caching, and limits compare?

Sanity’s Next.js toolkit documents client caching configuration and live-content helpers. Webflow distinguishes CMS API operations from content-delivery API reads, and its limits depend on plan and whether a request is served from cache.

Webflow plan grouping Documented rate limit
Starter and Basic 60 requests per minute
CMS, eCommerce, and Business 120 requests per minute
Enterprise Custom limit

These figures are from Webflow Developer Documentation accessed in 2026; verify current plan and endpoint conditions before implementation. Exceeding a limit can return HTTP 429 with a Retry-After header. Webflow says cached content-delivery API requests have effectively no rate limits; that statement is about cached delivery requests, not every API request. Uncached origin requests count against plan limits.

What should you compare in cost?

Webflow’s pricing page displayed a Premium site plan at $25 per month when billed yearly, with CMS access and API capabilities described across plans. That is a dated listing accessed October 7, 2026—not a complete project cost or a like-for-like comparison. Plan names, features, and prices can change, so verify the live pricing page before purchase.

No comparable current Sanity price or quota was established here. Build an estimate against the same requirements on both sides: editor seats, content volume, API traffic and limits, publishing workflow, preview requirements, and frontend hosting. Do not treat Webflow’s listed site-plan price as the total cost of a Next.js implementation or as directly comparable with an unverified Sanity configuration.

Which platform should a Next.js team choose?

Start with Sanity when

  • The project needs custom structured content, relationships, or developer-controlled queries.
  • Editors need a documented draft-preview and visual-editing loop connected to Next.js.
  • The team can implement and maintain route mapping, tokens, CORS, preview configuration, and client/query wiring.

Consider Webflow when

  • Its CMS model and APIs fit the content the application needs to deliver.
  • The team values Webflow’s platform workflow and is prepared to build or verify the separate Next.js integration.
  • Current plan limits, cached delivery behavior, publishing flow, and required preview behavior have been checked against the project’s needs.

Run a useful trial

  1. Model one representative content type, including its relationships and fields.
  2. Have an editor perform the project’s common create, revise, preview, and publish tasks.
  3. Verify the resulting content on the actual Next.js route and record how draft access and published updates work.
  4. Estimate API traffic using the intended endpoints and caching pattern, then check the relevant plan limits.
  5. Compare costs using the same editor count, content requirements, hosting assumptions, and delivery expectations.
