BJP leaders called for an investigation into the cremation of Sanamdeep Singh, a 23-year-old Dalit youth from Kanoi village in Punjab’s Sangrur district. Congress leader Raj Kumar Verka said the party would approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the State Human Rights Commission; the report described a planned approach, not a confirmed filing.
What happened in the Sangrur case
Sanamdeep Singh’s family protested for several days outside the mortuary at Sangrur civil hospital. They sought the arrest of four people booked on September 28 for alleged abetment of suicide and asked police to add provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, alleging threats and casteist abuse. Those claims have not been established in the reporting.
Reports differ on the date Singh died: Hindustan Times said he allegedly died by suicide on September 25, while the Times of India said he died on September 26, a day after allegedly consuming poison. The difference is unresolved in the available accounts.

Family and police give different accounts of the cremation
The family said it was not allowed a final look at Singh and that the cremation went ahead without them. Police said the hospital had informed them that the body was decomposing and that relatives repeatedly refused the post-mortem. An earlier report said a magistrate was deputed to tell the family to proceed. The accounts reviewed do not establish what notices were served or whether family consent was legally required.
