The SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 is a strong fit if your computer supports Thunderbolt and you regularly move large video files or high-resolution photos. It combines high Thunderbolt transfer rates with a rugged enclosure, but its USB connection is much slower, and buyers who do not need Thunderbolt or extra protection may find better value in a simpler portable SSD.
SanDisk PRO-G40 pros and cons at a glance

SanDisk’s performance figures are internal-test results, not guaranteed speeds for every setup. The manufacturer says actual performance can vary with the host device, use conditions, and capacity. SanDisk’s product page and its 2023 data sheet provide the stated specifications.
How fast is the PRO-G40?
Speed depends on the port and cable path between the SSD and computer. The PRO-G40 supports Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.2 Gen 2; plugging it into a USB connection does not deliver Thunderbolt-class performance.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match| Connection | SanDisk’s stated maximums | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Thunderbolt 3 | Up to 3000MB/s read and 2500MB/s write | Designed for demanding transfers when connected to a compatible Thunderbolt host. |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2 | Up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write | A useful fallback, but markedly slower than the advertised Thunderbolt figures. |
These are SanDisk internal-test figures published in its data sheet, copyright 2023; results may vary by host device, use conditions, and capacity. Independent testing by Digital Camera World in its August 2026 guide measured a maximum 2800MB/s read and 2604MB/s write. The publication says its highest results require Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5, and reports USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds below 1000MB/s. Those are that publication’s test results, not a guarantee for an individual computer. Digital Camera World’s guide describes its testing and comparison.
#1 Best Overall
- Super-fast speeds up to 3000MB/s(1) read and 2500MB/s(1) write with Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps), capable of moving 50GB in 1 minute or less
- Dual-mode compatibility with both Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) and USB-C (10Gbps)
- Ultra-rugged design with high-level IP68 dust/water resistance, 4000lb crush resistance, and 3m drop resistance (On a carpeted concrete floor.)
- Cool aluminum core pulls heat away from the internal drive to help maintain super-fast transfer speeds
- Pro-grade enclosure for premium strength you can feel
For a real-world decision, check the computer’s port specification rather than relying on the connector shape: USB-C describes a connector, not Thunderbolt support. If your host only supports USB, compare the PRO-G40’s USB performance and price with less expensive USB SSDs before paying for speed your setup cannot use.
Is the SanDisk PRO-G40 worth it?
It is most compelling when both of these are true: your workflow benefits from fast external transfers, and your computer can use Thunderbolt. It is also a more persuasive choice when your drive travels regularly and the added dust, water, drop, and crush protection matters.

- Super-fast speeds up to 2700MB/s(1) read and 1900MB/s(1) write with Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps), capable of moving 50GB in 1 minute or less.Specific uses: Business,Multimedia,Personal

- Cool aluminum core pulls heat away from the internal drive to help maintain super-fast transfer speeds
- Pro-grade enclosure for premium strength you can feel
- Worth considering: video editors and photographers who move large projects and have a compatible Thunderbolt computer.
- Less compelling: buyers whose computers offer USB 3.2 Gen 2 only, people who mostly store files rather than transfer them quickly, or anyone who does not need a rugged enclosure.
- Check the value: compare the capacity you need and the price per usable terabyte with other external SSDs, alongside their actual interface speeds and protection ratings.
How rugged is the PRO-G40?
SanDisk lists an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, 3m drop protection, and 4000lb crush resistance. The manufacturer identifies these as results based on internal testing. They are protection specifications, not a promise that the drive is indestructible or safe in every environment. Avoid treating a rating as permission to expose a drive to conditions beyond its stated limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe data sheet also describes a “Cool aluminum core” that “pulls heat away from the internal drive to help maintain super-fast transfer speeds.” This is SanDisk’s explanation of the design, not an independent guarantee of sustained performance in every workload.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Does the PRO-G40 work with a Mac or Windows PC?
SanDisk lists macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10 via reformatting on its product page. The data sheet identifies exFAT as the supplied file system and says APFS is available by reformatting. Confirm the host’s ports and your file-sharing needs before changing the format: reformatting can erase data, and a format chosen for one operating system or workflow may not suit another.
- For use across Mac and Windows: exFAT is the manufacturer-listed format; check that it fits the systems and applications you use.
- For an APFS workflow: SanDisk says APFS is available by reformatting. Back up files before reformatting.
- For Thunderbolt speed: verify that the computer supports Thunderbolt, not merely USB-C.
SanDisk lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions. Choose capacity based on the size of current projects and how much working space you need; the drive’s stated speed does not remove the need to budget for sufficient storage.

What should you check before buying?
- Confirm the host interface. Look up whether your computer’s port supports Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5, or only USB. The connection determines the applicable speed tier.
- Choose capacity and compare price per terabyte. The listed options are 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. Digital Camera World notes that the largest capacity is expensive, so compare the exact capacity you need against less costly drives.
- Check protection needs. Decide whether the manufacturer-stated dust, water, drop, and crush protection is valuable for how you carry and use the SSD.
- Check file-system requirements. Confirm whether the listed exFAT format or reformatting to APFS fits your computers and workflow, and back up data before reformatting.
- Check cable compatibility. Digital Camera World describes the supplied cable as short and says there is no USB-A cable in the box. If your host has only USB-A, verify that any cable you use supports the drive and your desired connection.
