SanDisk Optimus is the new brand identity for SanDisk’s internal SSD families previously sold as WD Blue and WD_BLACK. Announced on January 5, 2026, the lineup has three intended-use tiers—Optimus, Optimus GX, and Optimus GX PRO—but the names alone do not establish an independent performance ranking. The clearest published specifications are for the Optimus 5100, a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive.

What changed with the SanDisk Optimus brand?

SanDisk announced the Optimus identity on January 5, 2026, as the successor branding for its WD Blue and WD_BLACK internal NVMe SSD portfolio. The company said the transition begins with the announcement and that products carrying the updated brand were expected at select retailers worldwide in the first half of 2026. That was a rollout forecast, not confirmation of current stock, local availability, or pricing.

SanDisk describes the change as a way to make it easier to choose an SSD for a particular use. Its blog says customers are not losing specifications or speed from the previous lines; treat that as SanDisk’s continuity claim, not independent verification of every product SKU.

How do Optimus, GX, and GX PRO map to the old SSD names?

SanDisk’s published examples map three former products to the new tier names. The intended audiences below are the manufacturer’s positioning, not third-party test conclusions.

#1 Best Overall
SANDISK SSD Plus 1TB Internal Solid State Drive - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Read/Write Speeds of up to 545MB/s / 515MB/s - SDSSDA-1T00-G28
  • Easy upgrade for fast boots and application launches
  • High capacities for applications and large media files
  • Sequential Read speeds of up to 545MB/s and write speeds of up to 515MB/s(2) [1-2TB(1) models]
  • Shock-resistant for proven durability(3) - even if you drop your computer
New tier and example Previous example SanDisk’s intended audience
Optimus 5100 WD Blue SN5100 Creators seeking a balance of speed and affordability
Optimus GX 7100 WD_BLACK SN7100 Gaming
Optimus GX PRO 8100 WD_BLACK SN8100 Developers, professionals, and gamers building high-end PCs, workstations, or AI PCs

The table reflects SanDisk’s examples and product segmentation; it does not establish that every drive in one tier outperforms every drive in another. A purchase comparison still needs the exact model and capacity, its interface and form factor, capacity-specific specifications, warranty, system compatibility, and current local price.

What does the Optimus 5100 offer?

The Optimus 5100 is the most fully documented example in the announced family. SanDisk’s data sheet identifies it as an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD, offered in 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. The following are manufacturer-listed maximum sequential speeds based on SanDisk’s internal testing—not independent benchmark results. SanDisk says performance can vary with the host device, usage conditions, and capacity.

SANDISK Ultra 3D NAND 2TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Up to 560 MB/s - SDSSDH3-2T00-G26
  • Accelerate your PC for faster boot-up and blazing-fast gaming and graphics
  • Ultra-fast: sequential read speeds of up to 560MB/s; sequential write speeds of up to 520MB/s (1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. IOPS = input/output operations per second.)
  • 3D NAND provides greater endurance so your drive lasts longer and uses less power
  • nCache 2.0 technology delivers blazing-fast speeds
  • Shock-resistant to help keep your data safe—even if you drop your computer
Capacity Maximum sequential read Maximum sequential write Endurance rating
500GB 6,600 MB/s 5,600 MB/s 300 TBW
1TB 7,100 MB/s 6,700 MB/s 600 TBW
2TB 7,100 MB/s 6,700 MB/s 900 TBW
4TB 6,900 MB/s 6,700 MB/s 1,200 TBW

TBW means terabytes written, an endurance rating for the amount of data written over the drive’s rated life; it is not a prediction of the exact point at which an individual drive will fail. SanDisk lists Host Memory Buffer DRAM cache and SANDISK nCache 4.0 SLC cache for the 5100.

What are the warranty and endurance figures?

For the Optimus 5100, SanDisk lists a five-year limited warranty or the maximum endurance limit, whichever comes first. Warranty terms may differ by purchase region, so check the terms applicable to the exact drive and country.

SANDISK SSD Plus 500GB Internal Solid State Drive - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Read/Write Speeds of up to 545MB/s / 505MB/s - SDSSDA-500G-G28

SanDisk Support separately lists the GX PRO 8100 with a five-year term and these capacity-specific endurance ratings. Warranty wording depends on purchase country.

GX PRO 8100 capacity Listed endurance Listed term
1TB 600 TBW 5 years
2TB 1,200 TBW 5 years
4TB 2,400 TBW 5 years
8TB 4,800 TBW 5 years

These are manufacturer endurance and warranty listings, not results from comparative testing.

How to check whether an Optimus 5100 will fit your computer

The 5100’s M.2 2280 size and NVMe/PCIe interface are not universal compatibility guarantees. Before buying, confirm that the computer supports an M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSD and that the slot supports the drive’s interface. SanDisk describes the 5100 as an upgrade option for compatible laptops or a secondary desktop drive; the product information does not validate every computer or enclosure.

The drive includes Acronis True Image for SanDisk migration software. Moving data from an existing drive may require a separate cable or enclosure; confirm that any accessory supports the drive and your source system before relying on it.

Which Optimus tier should you consider?

  • Optimus: SanDisk positions this tier for creators looking for a balance of speed and affordability. The 5100 is the detailed example; compare the capacity-specific ratings rather than assuming one speed applies to every capacity.
  • Optimus GX: SanDisk positions GX for gaming, with the GX 7100 shown as the WD_BLACK SN7100 counterpart. The sources cited here do not provide a full set of GX specifications or independent cross-tier tests.
  • Optimus GX PRO: SanDisk positions this as the high-performance tier for developers, professionals, and gamers building high-end PCs, workstations, or AI PCs. The GX PRO 8100 endurance listings offer capacity-specific TBW and term information, but those figures alone do not prove real-world speed superiority.

For any tier, verify the exact model, capacity, system fit, warranty, and current availability in your region. SanDisk’s January 2026 announcement does not establish current retail stock or pricing, and the available tier descriptions are not a substitute for independent comparative testing.
