The new San Martino di Castrozza–Passo Rolle cable car is under construction, but it has not opened. The latest schedule announced by the Autonomous Province of Trento, on 21 July 2026, targets completion and commissioning in 2029. The planned 4.6-kilometre connection uses two integrated gondola lifts, with a 13-minute ride from Bellaria to Passo Rolle without changing cabins.

What is being built?

The project links the San Martino area with Passo Rolle through four main stations: Bellaria, Prà delle Nasse, Fosse di Sopra and Passo Rolle. It consists of two integrated gondola lifts with ten-seat cabins. A technical stop at Sass Maor is also planned for downhill-only travel by skiers heading toward the Cimon learning area. These details and figures are from the Autonomous Province of Trento’s 21 July 2026 project announcement (provincial project announcement).

What route will the cable car follow?

Bellaria is planned as the interchange between private transport, public transport and the gondola system. The route then reaches Prà delle Nasse, continues to Fosse di Sopra and proceeds toward Passo Rolle.

Prà delle Nasse: interchange and services

The project plans a two-level service center at Prà delle Nasse, including ticketing, an information point, equipment rental, a ski school, shops and food service. The province describes this stop as the system’s interchange and service hub.

Fosse di Sopra is planned to host the technical center. The second gondola section runs from here toward Passo Rolle.

Sass Maor: downhill-only stop

Sass Maor is a technical stop rather than one of the four main stations. The provincial plan describes it as a downhill-only access point for skiers going toward the Cimon learning area.

Earlier official destination updates forecast a sooner finish. The destination update of 5 November 2025 described a winter 2027/28 target and a different five-station, 1,650-metre configuration with a 17-minute journey. A February 2026 update still forecast December 2027. Those earlier specifications and dates should not be treated as the current plan in place of the later provincial announcement.

What will the project cost, and who is delivering it?

The province estimates the investment at approximately €55 million. Procurement was awarded in 2024 to a consortium led by Leitner S.p.A., with Collini Lavori S.p.A., Misconel S.r.l. and Grisenti S.r.l. The province says the project is financed through Trentino Sviluppo, which coordinates it.

What are the planned environmental and mobility measures?

The province presents the connection as an alternative to road travel intended to improve mobility and access for both winter and summer visitors. These are project goals; the cited announcement does not demonstrate that traffic, emissions, environmental conditions or visitor numbers have already changed.

According to the provincial design description, the route crosses the protected area at Prà delle Nasse on a single 290-metre span, with no construction works inside the special conservation area. The Fosse di Sopra station is planned underground to limit landscape impact. These are design choices reported by the province, not independent findings about the project’s environmental effects.
