Samsung Electronics has faced two distinct labor disputes: a South Korean conflict over pay and bonuses in its memory-chip business, and a 2024 strike at a home-appliance plant in India over union recognition and wages. Separately, the company reports supplier-audit and human-rights programs. The South Korean union paused a planned strike after a tentative agreement in May 2026, but the reporting cited here does not establish whether members ratified it.
How do the two Samsung labor disputes differ?
| Issue | South Korea | India |
|---|---|---|
| Business area | Chip operations, including memory | Home-appliance manufacturing at Sriperumbudur |
| Main worker demands | Higher compensation and greater transparency around bonuses | Union recognition and higher pay |
| Operational exposure | A potential interruption to memory-chip output, with possible effects on supply | Production at the plant; company and union accounts of disruption differed |
| Reported status | Planned 18-day strike paused after a tentative wage agreement; the cited May 2026 report does not give the member-vote result | The 37-day strike was reported to have ended in 2024; union recognition was left for a court decision |
These were not one company-wide stoppage. They involved different countries, business operations, demands and points in time.
Why did Samsung workers in South Korea threaten to strike?
The dispute centered on compensation and bonuses
At an April 23, 2026 rally at Samsung’s Pyeongtaek chip complex, workers pressed for higher pay and more transparent bonus rules, including opposition to limits on bonus payouts. Union officials estimated that about 40,000 members attended; the Associated Press reported that police had not immediately provided a crowd estimate, so that figure should be treated as the union’s estimate.

The Associated Press described Samsung and SK Hynix together as producing about two-thirds of global memory chips. That market context helps explain why the threatened action drew attention, but it does not mean that a shortage or other downstream disruption occurred.

A tentative deal paused the planned action, but ratification is not established
On May 20, 2026, the Associated Press reported that the union had paused a planned 18-day strike after reaching a tentative wage agreement through government-mediated negotiations over bonus payouts. Members were due to vote from May 22 through 27. Union leader Choi Seung-ho called the deal the result of “our all-out struggle spanning about six months”; Samsung negotiating partner Yeo Myounggoo described it as a possible “starting point for more stable relations with the union.”
The cited account gives the planned vote dates, not its outcome or the final implementation terms. It therefore supports saying the strike was paused after a tentative deal—not that the deal was ratified or that the dispute was conclusively settled.

Could a Samsung strike disrupt chip supply?
A strike affecting Samsung’s South Korean chip operations could pose a supply risk because Samsung is a major memory-chip producer. The Associated Press connected the threatened action to concerns about memory supply and investment in AI infrastructure. Those are forecasts and risk considerations, not evidence that the threatened strike caused a particular shortage or interrupted a customer’s supply.
The distinction matters: a labor dispute can create uncertainty for buyers and downstream manufacturers before any disruption is confirmed. In this case, the planned action was paused following the tentative agreement, and the reporting cited here does not document a resulting memory-chip supply interruption.

What happened at Samsung’s Indian appliance plant?
The September 2024 strike focused on recognition and pay
Workers at Samsung’s Sriperumbudur plant began striking on September 9, 2024. The Associated Press reported union demands for recognition and a 25–30% pay increase. Union spokesman K.C. Gopi Kumar said: “Our foremost demand is recognition of the union and its rights by the management.”
Accounts of the strike’s production impact differed. The union said production was disrupted; Samsung said the facility had moved toward average capacity. Those are attributed, conflicting accounts, not a single independently established production figure.

Samsung warned of unpaid wages; a later report said the strike ended
On September 20, Reuters reported that Samsung India warned striking workers they would not be paid for days not worked and could face dismissal. The company said it was acting under relevant laws and regulations, urged workers to return, and stated: “The safety and wellbeing of our workers are a priority. We remain committed to resolving this issue.”

A Business Standard report reproduced in a filing later said the 37-day strike ended after negotiations with management and Tamil Nadu’s government. It reported a wage-hike decision, no disciplinary action against strikers, and an agreement to await a court decision on union recognition. That report does not establish the later court outcome.

What does Samsung disclose about supplier oversight?
Its published audit figures describe a defined scope
Samsung’s 2025 sustainability disclosures say third-party audits were performed on 123 suppliers in 2024: 67 DX suppliers, 23 DS suppliers and 33 second-tier suppliers. In the company’s labor and human-rights compliance table, working-hours audit compliance rates were 78% for first-tier suppliers and 93% for second-tier suppliers.
Those percentages are Samsung’s results within its audit program, not a measurement of every supplier or a guarantee about conditions beyond the audited scope. The report also says the figures include improvement-implementation results based on each year’s audits, a qualification relevant to interpreting the rates.
The company reports broader coverage and a new committee in its 2026 update
Samsung’s 2026 report announcement, covering activities through 2025, says expanded third-party audit coverage reached 122 first-tier and 39 second-tier suppliers. It also says a Supply Chain Sustainability Committee launched in late 2025 to address labor rights, environmental management and occupational health and safety. These are company disclosures about program scope and governance, not independent assessments of supplier conditions.

Samsung says its supplier oversight includes supplier self-assessments, on-site audits, third-party audits, risk-based follow-up and grievance handling. It says its supplier code is based on the Responsible Business Alliance Code of Conduct and that it extended a supplier hotline to second-tier workers in 2024. These mechanisms indicate how the company says it seeks to identify and address risks; their existence alone does not establish how workers experience them or how effectively individual cases are resolved.
Samsung also said it conducted human-rights risk assessments across five global regions in 2024 and expanded third-party audits to 33 second-tier suppliers, according to its June 27, 2025 report announcement. The later 2026 announcement reports wider audit coverage, but neither announcement turns company-reported process figures into independent verification of every supplier’s labor conditions.
