Samsung’s answer to Apple’s AirTag is the Galaxy SmartTag2, a Bluetooth tracker built for compatible Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets. It can use ultra-wideband (UWB) for more precise nearby finding on supported Galaxy devices; beyond direct Bluetooth range, its location updates depend on nearby Galaxy devices participating in Samsung’s finding network.

For an Apple comparison, the current model is the second-generation AirTag, introduced in 2026. Both products depend on their phone ecosystems, compatible hardware and crowdsourced networks, so advertised range figures are not a controlled comparison of how reliably either tag will locate an item in a particular place.

What is Samsung’s answer to AirTag?

Galaxy SmartTag2 is Samsung’s item tracker. It communicates with compatible Galaxy devices over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and supports UWB-based precision finding on select Galaxy phones. Samsung’s U.S. product listing says setup requires a compatible Galaxy smartphone or tablet running Android 11.0 or later, at least 3 GB of free RAM, a Samsung account, registration in SmartThings Find and user opt-in. Samsung’s U.S. SmartTag2 product page has the current requirements and its examples of UWB-capable devices.

It is not a universal tracker: SmartTag2 is intended for Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem, rather than pairing directly with an iPhone. Check the exact phone model, not just its Android version, if UWB precision finding matters to you.

How does SmartTag2 find an item?

Nearby: Bluetooth and UWB

When your Galaxy device is close enough to communicate directly with the tag, Bluetooth supports nearby finding. Samsung lists Bluetooth range of up to 120 metres without obstacles and cautions that obstacles can reduce accuracy. Treat that as a manufacturer specification under the stated condition, not a promise that you will get a fresh or accurate position at that distance in a home, office or crowded street.

On compatible UWB-enabled Galaxy devices, SmartThings Find offers Compass View or Search Nearby to help guide you toward the tag. Basic Bluetooth-based finding does not mean a phone supports UWB: Samsung’s device compatibility list should be checked for the specific model. Samsung’s product information describes the feature and compatible-device examples.

Farther away: Galaxy Find Network

When the tag is outside the owner’s direct Bluetooth range, Samsung says Galaxy Find Network can report its location through opted-in Galaxy devices that come within range of the tag. This is crowdsourced, network-assisted reporting—not a live GPS connection or a guarantee that a location will update everywhere or at every moment. The odds of receiving a useful update depend on participating Galaxy devices being nearby.

Samsung’s product listing puts both parts of the claim together: “Bluetooth range of up to 120m without obstacles; if Galaxy SmartTag2 is out of range, Galaxy Find Network will be used to track (Galaxy Find Network accuracy based on opt-in Galaxy users who are in range of the SmartTag).”

What is different about the 2026 AirTag?

Apple introduced the second-generation AirTag in 2026. Like SmartTag2, it combines Bluetooth proximity finding with UWB-based Precision Finding on supported Apple devices, and uses the crowdsourced Find My network when it is away from its paired iPhone. Apple says the new AirTag’s Precision Finding reaches items from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation; that is a generation-to-generation Apple claim, not a comparison against SmartTag2. Apple’s 2026 announcement describes the update.

Apple’s announcement also says supported Apple Watch models can use Precision Finding, alongside supported iPhones. The technical specifications list Bluetooth, a second-generation Apple-designed UWB chip, NFC for Lost Mode and an integrated speaker. For current operating-system and device requirements, consult Apple’s AirTag technical specifications; support details can vary by region and page version.

Apple additionally says it has partnered with more than 50 airlines for Share Item Location links that can help participating airline personnel locate delayed luggage. Apple attributes to SITA reports of 26 percent fewer baggage delays and 90 percent fewer bags deemed truly lost or unrecoverable through use of the location-sharing workflow. Those are company-reported figures cited by Apple for participating carriers, not a controlled comparison of AirTag with Samsung’s tracker. Apple’s announcement provides the attribution and context.

SmartTag2 vs. AirTag: which should you buy?

Decision Galaxy SmartTag2 AirTag (2nd generation)
Phone ecosystem Requires a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet, Samsung account and SmartThings Find setup, according to Samsung’s U.S. product page. Requires a supported Apple device and Apple Account; check Apple’s current regional specifications for software requirements.
Nearby finding BLE; Samsung lists up to 120 metres without obstacles. UWB Compass View/Search Nearby requires a compatible UWB Galaxy device. Bluetooth and second-generation UWB. Apple claims up to 50 percent more Precision Finding range than the previous AirTag, not than SmartTag2.
Location beyond direct range Galaxy Find Network updates depend on opted-in Galaxy devices being in range of the tag. Find My uses nearby Apple devices to report an approximate location.
Battery Replaceable CR2032. Samsung estimates up to 500 days under typical usage conditions and up to 40 percent longer in Power Saving Mode. User-replaceable CR2032; the cited Apple specification page does not state a comparable battery-life duration.
Water and dust IP67 rating, according to Samsung. IP67 under IEC 60529, up to 1 metre for 30 minutes, according to Apple.
Finder-facing options NFC-based Lost Mode can display contact details entered in advance, according to Samsung product information. NFC Lost Mode; Apple also documents Share Item Location with participating airlines.
Privacy information described here Samsung’s launch announcement says tag location is made available with user permission; the sources cited here do not establish its current unwanted-tracker alert behavior in enough detail for a direct feature comparison. Apple describes cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts, frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers, end-to-end encryption and no location history stored on the tag.

Choose based first on the phone you already use. If you own a compatible Galaxy device, SmartTag2 is the Samsung option; if you use an iPhone, AirTag is the Apple option. For either one, consider whether compatible precision-finding hardware is important, whether the relevant network has participating devices where you need it, and whether the tag’s attachment and recovery features suit the item. Official descriptions do not establish equal network coverage or a real-world winner for range, accuracy, battery life, speaker loudness or recovery success.

Battery, durability and practical details

Samsung says SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell and estimates up to 500 days under typical usage conditions, with up to 40 percent more in Power Saving Mode. That is Samsung’s estimate, not a result from a direct test against AirTag; actual battery life depends on usage and settings. Apple confirms a user-replaceable CR2032 for the second-generation AirTag, but the cited technical specifications do not establish a duration that can be compared with Samsung’s figure.

Both devices carry an IP67 rating in their respective official specifications. Apple states its rating under IEC 60529 as protection at up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. The rating describes defined test conditions; it is not a guarantee against water damage, particularly as a device ages. SmartTag2 also has a built-in attachment loop, which may be useful when attaching it to a key ring or bag. Samsung’s product listing covers its design and rating.

Privacy and unwanted tracking

Use an item tracker for belongings, not to monitor a person without their knowledge. Apple says AirTag is designed exclusively to track objects and describes cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts and frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers. Apple also states that AirTag does not physically store location data or history on the tag and that communication with the Find My network is end-to-end encrypted. These are Apple’s statements about its product and network, not independent verification or a comparison with Samsung.

Apple’s Personal Safety guide says unwanted-tracking notifications for AirTags and Find My accessories are available on supported Apple operating systems. It also describes Google unwanted-tracker detection on Android 6.0 or later and detection of compatible Bluetooth trackers under the relevant industry specification on supported systems. Consult Apple’s unwanted-tracker safety guide and current Samsung and Google safety instructions for the latest steps. The official information cited here is not enough to conclude that SmartTag2’s alerts are either absent or equivalent to AirTag’s.
