Samsung’s 42.5Gbps GDDR7 is a real specification, but 42.5Gbps is a conditional peak—not the standard speed guaranteed for every graphics card. Samsung announced its 24Gb GDDR7 memory in October 2024, planned commercialization for early 2025, and later reported that production began in January 2025. Its stated operating speed is 40Gbps, with performance up to 42.5Gbps depending on the usage environment.

What Samsung announced—and what the numbers mean

In October 2024, Samsung described its 24Gb GDDR7 as the industry’s first memory of that density. It uses a fifth-generation 10nm-class process and increases cell density by 50% while keeping the predecessor package size. The 24Gb figure is capacity per memory chip: 24 gigabits equals 3 gigabytes, not 24 gigabytes.

Samsung said the memory uses PAM3, a three-level signaling method, to deliver 40Gbps per pin, with a possible increase to 42.5Gbps depending on the usage environment. These are data rates per pin, not the total bandwidth of a graphics card. Total bandwidth also depends on how many memory pins the GPU connects to.

Samsung’s investor reports list up to 1.92TB/s of total bandwidth for the 24Gb GDDR7 implementation. That figure corresponds to a 40Gbps data rate across a 384-bit memory interface: 40 gigabits per second multiplied by 384 pins, then divided by eight bits per byte. It should not be read as a promised bandwidth figure for every card using this memory. A board’s memory configuration and GPU interface matter.

Is 42.5Gbps the normal speed or an overclocked maximum?

Samsung presents 40Gbps as the graphics-memory speed and 42.5Gbps as an environment-dependent upper figure. The announcement does not define a single set of conditions under which every device can sustain 42.5Gbps, so it is more accurate to treat that number as a conditional peak than as a standard operating speed or an automatic overclock available to buyers.

In practice, a graphics card’s advertised memory speed is determined by its GPU and board implementation, not just the capabilities of a memory chip. Check the specifications for the specific card: a manufacturer’s mention of GDDR7 does not establish that the board runs its memory at 42.5Gbps.

What changed from earlier GDDR7, and how does it compare with GDDR6?

Samsung’s first GDDR7 announcement, on July 19, 2023, cited speeds up to 32Gbps per pin, bandwidth up to 1.5TB/s, and 20% better power efficiency than GDDR6. Its October 2024 24Gb announcement raised the stated speed to 40Gbps, with a conditional peak of 42.5Gbps. Those are Samsung’s published figures for its products; they are not a controlled, like-for-like benchmark of graphics cards.

The 2024 announcement also reported more than 30% improved power efficiency compared with Samsung’s 16Gb GDDR7 reference, using clock-control management and a dual-VDD design. This is a comparison with its earlier GDDR7 reference, not a claim of more than 30% improvement over GDDR6. Samsung’s 2025 half-year report separately recorded an 11% improvement in package thermal resistance versus previous GDDR7. Neither figure, by itself, establishes a specific reduction in a finished graphics card’s power draw or temperature.

When did it arrive, and what is its status now?

  • July 19, 2023: Samsung announced its first GDDR7, with speeds up to 32Gbps per pin and bandwidth up to 1.5TB/s.
  • October 17, 2024: Samsung announced 24Gb GDDR7. It said validation with major GPU customers would begin that year and commercialization was planned for early 2025.
  • January 2025: Samsung’s 2025 half-year report recorded production of 24Gb GDDR7.
  • 2026 reporting: Samsung’s first-quarter 2026 report continued to list the up-to-42.5Gbps specification and bandwidth up to 1.92TB/s.

That establishes that production began and the specification remained in Samsung’s reported product portfolio. It does not, on its own, confirm which retail graphics cards use these exact chips or what models are currently available in a particular country.

What graphics cards use Samsung’s 42.5Gbps GDDR7?

Samsung identifies graphics cards as a use for GDDR7, alongside PCs, workstations, game consoles, AI computing, high-performance computing, data centers, and automotive systems. The cited announcements and reports do not identify a particular retail graphics-card model as using this 24Gb memory at 42.5Gbps. To verify a card, look for an explicit memory specification from the GPU or board maker; the GDDR7 label alone does not confirm Samsung as the supplier or a 42.5Gbps operating rate.

When comparing cards, check the memory data rate, total bus bandwidth, installed capacity, power and thermal specifications, and whether the exact board uses GDDR7. A high per-pin speed is only one part of the memory subsystem.

Can you buy Samsung GDDR7 memory separately?

Samsung’s announcements establish a graphics-memory product and intended applications, but they do not establish separate consumer retail availability, a price, or a Samsung-branded graphics card. For most buyers, the practical route is to choose a graphics card whose manufacturer specifies its memory configuration, rather than assume that the memory chips are sold as a standalone upgrade.
