Samsung announced a 256TB QLC NAND SSD and a separate petabyte-scale storage architecture called PBSSD at Flash Memory Summit (FMS) 2023. The announcement described enterprise storage concepts aimed at fitting more data into data-center power and space limits—not consumer drives with a stated release date or retail availability.
What Samsung announced at FMS 2023
In an August 9, 2023 report, Samsung said Yong Ho Song, Corporate EVP of Memory Solution Product & Development, announced a 256TB QLC NAND SSD at FMS. Samsung positioned the drive for data centers that need to maximize storage within server-rack power and physical-space constraints. The same report introduced PBSSD, a distinct petabyte-scale architecture whose capacity could vary according to the application. Samsung’s FMS 2023 announcement describes what the company presented; it does not establish that either concept shipped.
The 256TB QLC SSD
QLC NAND stores four bits per memory cell, a technology used to increase storage density. Samsung’s announcement emphasized capacity, but did not provide a full product specification, workload benchmark, price, or release schedule for the 256TB drive. Capacity alone therefore cannot establish how it would perform in a particular data-center workload.

PBSSD was described as an architecture for petabyte-scale storage, with capacity that could vary by application. It is not the same thing as the announced 256TB SSD: Samsung presented the drive and the architecture as separate developments.

How much power could a 256TB SSD save?
Samsung said one 256TB SSD used approximately seven times less power than eight 32TB SSDs holding the same total data. That is Samsung’s comparison, not an independently verified benchmark. Its report does not detail the test protocol or establish that the same ratio would apply across workloads, systems, or operating conditions. The figure is best read as the company’s illustration of the potential power benefit of consolidating storage capacity.
What Traffic Isolation is meant to do
Samsung also described Traffic Isolation for multi-tenant use, where multiple virtual machines share an SSD. Under the concept, each virtual machine receives pre-allocated bandwidth, intended to prevent other users’ activity from interfering with its operation. The announcement explains the intended allocation behavior, but does not provide independent latency or performance results.

How the announcement fits Samsung’s later storage roadmap
Samsung’s later FMS reports discuss AI infrastructure and a broader enterprise-storage portfolio. They provide context about the company’s direction, but do not confirm that the 2023 256TB SSD or PBSSD architecture became commercially available.

Samsung’s 2025 recap identifies high performance, high capacity, thermal control, and security as requirements for AI infrastructure storage. It describes PM1763 as an upcoming PCIe 6.0 SSD and Z-NAND Memory Class Storage as a low-latency tier for AI inference. These are roadmap details, not a shipment update for the 2023 announcements. FMS 2026: TLC for performance, QLC for capacity
In its 2026 recap, Samsung describes PM1763 as a PCIe Gen6 TLC SSD based on V9 V-NAND for AI training and inference, and Gen5 QLC SSDs as high-density, cost-efficient storage for large-scale environments. The company frames TLC as suited to performance-intensive data and QLC to high-capacity data. The recap also discusses V10 NAND with a structure exceeding 400 layers; that is later roadmap context, not a specification of the 2023 256TB SSD. Samsung’s FMS 2026 recap

The reports establish no purchase path, price, launch date, or commercial availability for the 256TB SSD or PBSSD. They should not be treated as products a buyer can order based on the announcement alone. For an enterprise storage decision, capacity is only one part of the evaluation; buyers also need workload-specific evidence on performance and latency, power, rack-space needs, thermal behavior, security, and total cost of ownership. Samsung’s announced power comparison is not enough to determine those trade-offs for a particular deployment.
