Samsung’s headline is about a 24Gb GDDR7 memory chip, not a 24GB chip. That is 24 gigabits, or 3 gigabytes nominally. Samsung currently lists GDDR7 speeds up to 40Gbps; its October 2024 announcement said the chip could reach 42.5Gbps under usage-dependent conditions. The company names graphics cards and game consoles as application areas, but its specific integration example is a workstation and server GPU—not a confirmed consumer gaming card or console.
First, the capacity is 24Gb—not 24GB
The distinction is a matter of units: 8 bits make 1 byte, so a 24Gb chip holds 3GB nominally. Samsung’s product overview lists 24Gb as a GDDR7 chip density, alongside 16Gb. It does not mean one chip contains 24GB, nor that a graphics card or console with this memory will have 24GB of total VRAM. A device’s total memory capacity depends on how many chips it uses and its design.
Samsung separately says NVIDIA’s RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation and Server GPUs support memory configurations up to 96GB. That figure describes the GPU family’s total memory configuration, not the capacity of an individual 24Gb chip. Samsung’s GDDR overview and its GDDR7 technology blog make these distinct levels of capacity clear.

Samsung’s current GDDR product overview lists speeds up to 40Gbps. In its October 17, 2024 announcement, Samsung said the chip could reach up to 42.5Gbps depending on usage conditions. Treat 40Gbps as the listed headline rate and 42.5Gbps as a conditional maximum Samsung reported—not a speed guaranteed in every product. These are per-pin data-rate figures, not a promise of a particular game frame rate or AI workload performance.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
- Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
Samsung described the 24Gb chip as a successor to its 16Gb GDDR7. Its October 2024 announcement said the new chip raises cell density by 50% while keeping the same package size and improves power efficiency by more than 30% compared with the 16Gb predecessor. Those are Samsung’s vendor-reported comparisons, not independent system-level benchmark results.
What enables the density and speed?
Samsung says the chip uses fifth-generation 10nm-class DRAM and three-level PAM3 signaling. It also cites clock-control and dual-voltage design techniques for power management. In Samsung’s account, these manufacturing and design choices support the higher density and speed while managing power consumption. The company announced the development on October 17, 2024, describing it then as the industry’s first 24-gigabit GDDR7 DRAM. Samsung’s announcement provides the company’s technical claims and comparison with its earlier 16Gb part.

Are GPUs and game consoles using it?
Samsung identifies graphics cards and gaming consoles as traditional graphics-memory applications, and says the 24Gb part could also serve AI workstations and data centers. Those statements describe application areas; they do not confirm that a named consumer graphics card or console uses this particular chip.

The named example is a workstation and server GPU
Samsung’s GDDR7 technology blog says its 24Gb GDDR7 enables integration into NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation and Server GPUs, which support memory configurations up to 96GB. This is the specific integration example Samsung names. The blog discusses Samsung’s 16Gb GDDR7 separately in connection with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, so that consumer-GPU reference should not be treated as proof that the 24Gb chip is in those cards.

What the announcement means for buyers
A denser memory chip can help product designers build higher-capacity memory configurations within package constraints, while a higher per-pin data rate can increase the memory interface’s potential bandwidth. But the chip’s specifications alone do not establish a graphics card’s total VRAM, gaming performance, power use, or availability. Those depend on the complete product and its implementation. Samsung’s cited figures describe its memory component and its own comparisons; the sources do not provide independent gaming or AI benchmarks for this 24Gb part.
Samsung said in October 2024 that validation with major GPU customers would begin during that year and that commercialization was planned for early 2025. Those were plans stated at the time, not a current schedule or a confirmation of availability in a particular retail product.
