Samsung disclosed a semiconductor contract-manufacturing agreement worth approximately US$16.544 billion, running from July 26, 2025, through December 31, 2033. Tesla was initially unnamed in Samsung’s disclosure; Elon Musk and Tesla’s proxy later identified Tesla as the customer and connected the deal to the next-generation AI6 chip.

What are the disclosed terms of the Samsung–Tesla deal?

Samsung’s 2025 disclosure put the agreement’s value at KRW 22.8 trillion, or approximately US$16.544 billion. Samsung calculated the dollar amount using the opening exchange rate on July 28, 2025. The filing described the value as 7.6% of Samsung’s 2024 revenue.

Term Disclosed detail
Customer Tesla, Inc.
Scope Semiconductor contract manufacturing; Tesla’s proxy links the agreement to its next-generation AI6 chip.
Value KRW 22.8 trillion, approximately US$16.544 billion using Samsung’s July 28, 2025 opening exchange rate.
Contract period July 26, 2025–December 31, 2033.
Process technology Not stated in Samsung’s disclosure or Tesla’s proxy.
Production volume and per-chip price Not stated in Samsung’s disclosure or Tesla’s proxy.

The 7.6% figure is a comparison with Samsung’s 2024 revenue, not a measure of profit or an annual payment schedule. The disclosed contract value does not by itself show how revenue or deliveries are distributed across the contract period.

How was Tesla identified as the customer, and what is AI6’s connection?

Samsung’s disclosure named the counterparty as a major customer but did not identify it publicly. Musk subsequently confirmed Tesla’s involvement, and Tesla’s proxy referred to “Tesla’s recent $16.5 billion deal with Samsung.” The proxy said the arrangement would help Tesla maximize manufacturing efficiency for its next-generation AI6 chip.

Musk said: “Samsung’s giant new Texas fab will be dedicated to making Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chip. The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate.” His statement identifies Samsung’s new Texas fab as the intended manufacturing site. It does not, on its own, establish that the entire facility is exclusively reserved for Tesla.

Is Samsung already making Tesla’s AI6 chip in Texas?

The available announcement-era reporting did not provide an AI6 production timetable. The available sources do not establish that production or shipments have begun, so claims that AI6 is already being produced should be treated as unverified. They also do not establish a production start date, shipment volumes, or yield targets.

Why does the agreement matter to Samsung and Tesla?

For Samsung

Reuters characterized the agreement as a potential boost to Samsung’s underperforming foundry business. A multiyear contract with a major customer could provide an anchor order and a longer production horizon for its contract-manufacturing operation. The disclosed value alone, however, does not establish Samsung’s eventual profit, production utilization, or how much of the order will be fulfilled.

For Tesla

Tesla’s proxy frames the benefit as manufacturing efficiency for AI6. Working with an external foundry is also consistent with adding manufacturing capacity beyond Tesla’s own chip operations, but the disclosed information does not quantify the split between internal and external production or guarantee a particular level of supply.

What remains undisclosed?

  • The AI6 production start date and shipment schedule.
  • Chip volumes, per-chip pricing, and yield targets.
  • Whether the agreement includes take-or-pay obligations.
  • The process node or other detailed manufacturing specifications.

The available sources also do not document a later amendment or cancellation. That is a limit of what those sources establish, not proof that no subsequent change has occurred.
