Yes. Supported Samsung Galaxy Watch models measure heart rate through Samsung Health. You can take a manual reading or, depending on the model and settings, have the watch measure continuously or at intervals while you are still. Automatic tracking is not guaranteed to be on: a watch set to manual-only will not take readings in the background.
How Galaxy Watch heart-rate tracking works
The watch uses lights and sensors on its back to measure heart rate, with readings available through Samsung Health. The feature is documented for supported Galaxy Watch models, but menus and available settings vary by device, software version, and region. Samsung’s current Gulf setup guide is based on Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Fit3, so its steps may not match older watches. Samsung Gulf’s setup guide
Choose how often the watch measures
Samsung documents three general measurement modes. The wording and availability can differ by model and software.
| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Continuous or always | Measures heart rate continuously. |
| Periodic while still | Measures every 10 minutes while you are still. |
| Manual only | Measures when you start a reading in Samsung Health; it does not take automatic readings between manual checks. |
The 10-minute interval is Samsung’s description of this setting, not an independent accuracy or performance result. The cited instructions do not establish a universal battery-life difference between modes.

Set up automatic or manual readings
Use the instructions for your exact watch when menu names differ. Samsung’s US support page describes these general routes, while noting that steps can vary by model. Samsung US: Monitor your heart rate on your Samsung smart watch
Change the automatic measurement setting
- On supported Wear OS watches, open Samsung Health on the watch and go to its heart-rate settings. Older generations may use labels such as HR and stress measurement or Auto HR settings.
- Choose continuous measurement, measurement every 10 minutes while still, or manual-only measurement if those options are available.
- If you want background readings, make sure the setting is not manual-only. On the Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Fit3 models covered by Samsung’s Gulf guide, the route is Wearable app > watch settings > Health > Heart rate; select a measurement cycle there.
Take a manual reading
- Open Samsung Health on the watch.
- Tap Heart rate, then Measure.
- Keep your arm still while the watch takes the reading.
Improve the chance of a useful reading
Samsung recommends a snug fit so the back sensor stays in contact with your skin. Its Gulf guide advises wearing the watch about one finger’s width above the wrist bone toward the elbow. For a spot measurement, sit and relax, stay still, and take a short break before measuring mid-workout. Samsung Gulf’s fit and setup guidance

Placement, skin condition, activity, environmental conditions, settings, and other user interactions can affect readings. Samsung also notes that some users, including people with thin wrists, may receive inaccurate measurements. It does not provide a universal accuracy percentage in the cited guidance, so a reading should not be treated as guaranteed or as a clinical measurement. Samsung US support guidance and limitations

A heart-rate reading is a general health-management feature, not a diagnosis. Samsung cautions that information from the watch, Samsung Health, or related software is not intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent disease. Do not use it as a substitute for professional medical care. Heart-rate tracking is also distinct from ECG or blood-pressure features, which have their own compatibility and regional limits.
