No—not if you use your Galaxy Watch as a Bluetooth companion to your phone. You need an eligible carrier plan only if you want an LTE-capable watch to connect to mobile service when your phone is away. That plan may share your phone number or, where the carrier offers it, use a separate number.
When you can use a Galaxy Watch without adding a line
A Bluetooth Galaxy Watch pairs with your phone and does not need its own cellular plan. If you are happy to keep the phone nearby for connectivity, you can use the watch without activating LTE service. Samsung distinguishes Bluetooth and LTE models in its LTE activation guidance.
Buying an LTE model does not include mobile service. LTE hardware and a carrier plan are separate requirements: the watch must be an LTE model, and the carrier must activate an eligible plan for it.
Choose the connection that matches how you use your watch
| Setup | Works away from the phone? | Number arrangement | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth paired use | Depends on the watch’s connection to the phone | Uses the paired phone’s connection | No watch cellular plan is needed. |
| LTE with number sharing | Yes, with an active carrier plan and LTE coverage | The watch can use the phone’s number, if the carrier and account support it | Verizon’s Number Share, for example, lets eligible Samsung Galaxy Watches make and receive calls using one shared number. Verizon Number Share FAQs |
| LTE standalone service | Yes, subject to the plan and carrier’s terms | May use a separate number | Availability and features vary. Verizon says its standalone setup works without a companion phone after initial activation, but some options still require a phone; it cannot use Number Share. Verizon’s standalone setup guidance |
Number sharing and standalone service are different arrangements, and neither is guaranteed for every watch, account, carrier, or country. Check the exact model and account with your carrier before choosing LTE hardware or a plan.

What an added watch line means
A smartwatch line is a carrier service plan for the watch; it does not necessarily mean the watch gets a different phone number. With number sharing, eligible devices can use the phone’s number. A standalone plan may instead assign a separate number and can have different features or restrictions.
Ask the carrier whether it supports number sharing or standalone service for your exact Galaxy Watch model and account. Confirm the recurring charge, taxes and fees, activation requirements, and any limits before enrolling.

How to activate LTE service
Samsung’s US activation guidance directs users through the Galaxy Wearable app. Its described flow requires an eligible carrier plan; Samsung names AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon for that US process. This is not a universal compatibility list: support varies by market, watch model, carrier, phone, software, and account type. See Samsung’s current LTE activation instructions and your carrier’s instructions.

Carrier steps can be more specific. For example, Verizon’s instructions for the Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic require activation on a Number Share line and direct users to Galaxy Wearable > Watch settings > Mobile Plans, followed by account verification. Those instructions apply to the covered models, not every Galaxy Watch. Verizon’s Watch4 and Watch4 Classic activation steps
AT&T’s cited Watch 4 guidance says the paired device needs an eSIM or physical SIM to add a mobile plan. If activation fails, the watch has been reset, or the available menu differs, follow the carrier’s instructions for that model. AT&T’s Galaxy Watch 4 cellular connection guidance

What a watch line may cost
There is no universal monthly price. Verizon Support’s prepaid FAQ lists $10 per line per month, plus taxes and fees for its listed standalone and Number Share smartwatch plans. The FAQ does not state a year; treat this as a carrier-specific example, not a current quote for every account or a market-wide estimate.
