Samsung’s U.S. washer recalls cover specific top-load models and serial numbers—not every Samsung washer. Find both identifiers on your machine, then check them against the official recall information. The 2016 recall concerned washer tops that could detach; the 2022 recall addressed a fire hazard and called for a software update. Each has a different remedy.
How to check whether your Samsung washer is recalled
- Find the model and serial number. Check the labels on the washer. For the 2016 recall, the CPSC says the information is on labels at the back. For the 2022 recall, it identifies a label inside the top lid and another on the rear. Record the complete numbers, including letters, digits, and suffixes. See the CPSC’s 2016 notice and its 2022 notice.
- Check the applicable official recall page. Use Samsung’s 2016 recall information or its 2022 software-update support page. A model-family match alone may not be enough: serial-number ranges determine whether some units are included.
- Follow the instructions for that specific recall. If the result is unclear, the washer may already have received a remedy, or you need help with the process, contact Samsung through the current official support route.
This information concerns U.S. recalls. Recall coverage and remedies may differ in other countries.

The CPSC announced the recall on November 4, 2016. It covered 34 Samsung top-load washer models, with inclusion depending on serial information. The hazard was the washer top detaching unexpectedly from the chassis during use. Samsung describes the affected products as certain top-load units manufactured from March 2011 through October 2016; front-load washers were not affected by this recall.

Remedy and precautions
The CPSC notice described three options: a free in-home repair to reinforce the washer top, with a one-year manufacturer-warranty extension; a rebate toward a new Samsung or other-brand washer, with installation and removal described in the notice; or a full refund for consumers who bought the washer within 30 days of the recall announcement. These are terms from the historical notice, not confirmation that an option remains available to a particular owner.

For owners awaiting a remedy, Samsung’s recall page gives precautionary guidance to use the delicate or waterproof cycle for bedding, water-resistant, or bulky items until the repair is complete, the washer is exchanged, or the Home Label Kit is applied. Check Samsung’s official support route for instructions and the status of your case.

Announced on December 22, 2022, this recall covers specified top-load washers in the WA49B, WA50B, WA51A, WA52A, WA54A, and WA55A series, subject to the model and serial-number ranges in the notice. The identified hazard is a short circuit that can cause overheating and fire.

The CPSC notice reported 51 reports of smoking, melting, overheating, or fire, including 10 reports of property damage. These are reports recorded in the notice—not a failure rate or a count of unique affected machines.
Software update remedy
The CPSC describes the remedy as a software repair. Samsung says affected washers should be updated before use. Owners of affected machines without Wi-Fi capability should contact Samsung about obtaining a dongle to download the update. Check the precise model and serial ranges and follow the current instructions on Samsung’s 2022 recall support page.
