Neither Samsung nor Redmi is automatically better. The right choice depends on the exact phones available where you live, their prices and configurations, and what matters most to you: software support, battery and charging, display, camera, performance, service access, or compatibility with devices you already use.
How to decide between Samsung and Redmi
Compare specific phones at similar prices and with the same memory and storage tier. A brand name alone cannot tell you which model is the better buy, and specifications do not establish real-world camera quality, speed, reliability, or battery life.
- Match price and configuration. Compare the full price in your country for equivalent memory and storage. A cheaper phone with less storage may not be a like-for-like alternative.
- Check software support for each model. Look for the promised OS-upgrade count, security-update period, and regional support information on the phone’s official product page. Do not assume a general brand policy applies to every model.
- Compare the features you will notice. Check display technology, size, brightness and refresh rate, as well as battery capacity and charging specifications. These figures describe stated hardware, not how the phone will feel or last in your use.
- Look for evidence on cameras and performance. Use camera samples and independent tests relevant to the exact models. Consider your own workload—such as gaming, video, or everyday apps—rather than relying on a processor name or a brand-wide reputation.
- Account for ownership and compatibility. Check repair and service access where you live, and whether the phone works well with your existing devices and services.
What a specific India-market comparison shows
The official specifications for the India-market Xiaomi Redmi 15 5G and Samsung Galaxy M17 5G illustrate the trade-offs. They do not establish which model is better in another country, at another price, or in day-to-day use.
| Specification | Xiaomi Redmi 15 5G (India) | Samsung Galaxy M17 5G (India) |
|---|---|---|
| Battery and charging | 7,000 mAh typical battery; 33 W charging. Xiaomi India specifications | 5,000 mAh typical battery; 25 W charging. Samsung India product page |
| Display | 6.9-inch FHD+ display, refresh rate up to 144 Hz. Xiaomi India specifications | Not stated in the cited Samsung product information. |
| Processor | Not stated in the cited Xiaomi specifications. | Exynos 1330. Samsung India product page |
| Operating system and support | Android 15 with HyperOS 2; two years of Android upgrades and four years of security updates. Xiaomi India specifications | Six generations of OS upgrades and six years of security updates; the cited Samsung page gives a security-update validity date of 30 September 2031 and says the information describes current plans, not a commitment. On stated specifications, the Redmi has a larger battery, faster wired charging, and a higher listed maximum refresh rate. The M17 advertises longer software support. Those differences do not prove which phone lasts longer between charges, has the better display in person, runs a particular workload faster, or takes better photos.

How to interpret Samsung and Xiaomi support policies
Samsung’s security page says that, as of January 2024, the company was extending security-update support for Galaxy devices by up to seven years. Eligibility depends on the listed device and rollout cadence; it is not a seven-year promise for every Samsung phone. Samsung Mobile Security
Xiaomi says it provides continuous security updates for Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO smartphones, and that some models may receive security updates for three years or longer, subject to actual conditions. That general statement is not a model-specific guarantee. Xiaomi support FAQ
