Neither Samsung nor Apple holds a permanent crown. Samsung led Apple in worldwide smartphone shipments in Q2 2026, while Apple led in Q4 2025, according to different market trackers. For a buyer, shipment rankings are context—not a verdict on which phone is better. The useful question is which operating system, ecosystem, features, and price suit your needs.
Who leads the smartphone market?
It depends on the quarter and the measurement. IDC’s final historical results put Samsung at 22.7% of worldwide smartphone shipments in Q2 2026, with 62.7 million units, and Apple at 20.2%, with 55.7 million units. Those figures describe shipments during that quarter—not profit, customer satisfaction, active users, or product quality. IDC’s Q2 2026 smartphone market-share results
In a different quarter, Omdia reported Apple at 25% and Samsung at 18% of worldwide smartphone shipments in Q4 2025. That seasonal quarter’s ranking does not contradict IDC’s later result; it shows why a single quarter cannot establish a timeless leader. Omdia’s Q4 2025 market results
Samsung’s investor disclosure reports annual global smartphone market shares by quantity of 19.2% in 2025, 18.3% in 2024, and 19.7% in 2023, attributing the figures to TechInsights. That is Samsung’s reported series, not a matched comparison with Apple in the cited disclosure. Samsung Electronics investor disclosure

IDC senior research director Nabila Popal characterized the Q2 2026 market this way: “Q2 confirms exactly what we predicted: this is not a uniform downturn; memory crisis is favoring premium players and punishing vendors exposed to the low end.” This is Popal’s interpretation of market conditions, not a direct judgment on either company’s phones. How do Apple and Samsung ecosystems differ?
Apple: tightly connected hardware and software
Apple says it designs and develops nearly the entire solution for its products, including hardware, operating systems, applications, and related services. Its 2025 Form 10-K lists price, features, quality and reliability, design, innovation, third-party software and accessories, and service and support among the factors on which it competes. That describes Apple’s strategy; it does not mean integration is automatically better for every buyer. Apple’s 2025 Form 10-K

How should you choose between them?
Start with the operating system and devices you already use
If you prefer iOS or Android, or rely on apps and workflows associated with one, treat that preference as a practical requirement rather than trying to prove one system universally superior. List your current phone, computer, tablet, watch, earbuds, and services. Switching can mean replacing accessories or changing familiar workflows; the value of staying within an ecosystem depends on the devices you actually use.
Compare the exact price and configuration
Check the same country, storage capacity, carrier terms, and purchase timing. Prices and promotions vary by market and retailer, so an unqualified price from a comparison article may not match what you can buy. Compare the total cost of the exact configurations available to you, including any accessories you need.

Match camera and screen needs to real use
Decide what matters most: photography controls, video, zoom, screen size, or outdoor viewing. Those priorities are more useful than treating broad review adjectives as measurements. Check official specifications for the particular regional model, then consider whether independent reviews address the activity you care about.
Check for hardware and accessory features you will use
If a stylus or a particular accessory system matters, verify its presence and compatibility on the manufacturer’s specifications for your region and model. Apple lists MagSafe wireless charging for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup; MagSafe-specific accessories should not be assumed to fit Samsung phones. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications
Look into support and repair where you live
Before buying, compare local warranty terms, repair availability, service access, and each maker’s published update commitments for the exact model. A directly comparable support-duration commitment for these two current flagships is not established here, so check each company’s current official policy for your market rather than assuming the terms match.

Which brand should you buy?
Choose the phone that fits your preferred operating system, existing devices, must-have features, local support options, and budget for the exact configuration. The market data does not settle that personal decision: IDC’s Q2 2026 shipment comparison favors Samsung, while Omdia’s Q4 2025 comparison favors Apple. If you are shopping below flagship level, compare models in the price range you will actually buy rather than using the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra as stand-ins for both full lineups.
