If your Samsung remote’s voice button fails but Power, volume, and navigation still work, start with the TV’s internet connection, voice setup, microphone controls, and surrounding noise—not with a replacement remote. If ordinary buttons fail too, check the remote’s power, reset it using instructions for its type, and pair it again. Samsung procedures vary by TV model, remote generation, and region.
First, tell a voice-only fault from a remote-wide fault
Try Power, volume, and navigation. If those buttons work normally but voice does not, focus on the TV’s network and voice configuration, microphone controls, noise, and software. If several buttons fail or respond slowly, investigate the remote’s battery or charge and its pairing as well; weak power can affect remote behavior.
If only voice control fails, check the TV
Confirm the internet connection and voice setup
Check that the TV is online and its network connection is stable. Samsung notes that voice recognition may depend on a connection because commands are processed through Bixby servers. Confirm that voice recognition and the assistant you intend to use are configured on the TV. Available assistants and settings can depend on the model, language, account, and region. Samsung’s voice-recognition troubleshooting guidance describes these checks.

Check for a TV microphone switch and reduce noise
Some Samsung TVs have a physical microphone switch. If your model has one, make sure it is enabled; not every TV has this control. Reduce background noise and speak clearly at a normal volume while holding the remote’s voice button as directed by its manual. A quiet or noisy room can interfere with recognition.

Update the TV software
Check the TV’s settings for an available software update. Menu names and locations differ among models, so use the manual for your exact TV if the options described here do not match. Samsung’s regional support guidance also identifies network setup, voice-recognition settings, and noise as possible causes; its Korean service article on Smart Hub terms is dated 2019, so it should not be treated as a current menu map for every model.
If other remote buttons fail too, check power and pairing
Identify the remote’s power type
Use fresh batteries of the correct type and orientation only if your remote takes replaceable batteries. Solar and rechargeable remotes may not use replaceable batteries; check the remote model before buying any. Samsung Canada also advises that removing and reinserting batteries can resolve some pairing issues, and weak batteries may cause intermittent response.

Reset a battery-powered remote
Samsung US’s procedure for a battery remote is to remove the batteries, hold Power for eight seconds, reinstall the batteries, and test the remote. This instruction is not universal across every remote generation or region; consult the instructions for your model if the sequence does not apply.
Reset a supported solar remote
For a solar remote associated with a 2021-or-newer TV, Samsung US specifies holding Return and Enter—the center of the navigation pad—for ten seconds, then pairing the remote again. Confirm that your remote and TV match this procedure before using it.

Pair the remote again
Pairing button combinations and hold times differ by region and model. Samsung US instructs users to hold Return and Play/Pause together for at least five seconds at close range; Samsung Canada specifies at least three seconds. Follow the instructions for your TV and region, and wait for the on-screen connection message rather than assuming pairing succeeded.
Use the camera test only as an infrared check
Samsung US suggests pointing the remote’s Power button at a digital camera or phone or tablet camera, then holding the button while watching the camera screen. A colored light may indicate that the Power button is emitting an infrared signal. If no light appears, try fresh batteries and repeat the test; if the signal is still absent, Samsung advises replacing the remote.

This test checks the Power button’s infrared signal. It does not test the microphone or prove that voice recognition is working.
Choose a replacement only after the checks
If resetting and pairing do not help, identify the full TV model number and confirm that the replacement remote is compatible with that exact set and supports voice control. Samsung says remote designs and functions vary. Samsung Canada directs owners to search by TV model number for the matching remote; availability of parts and purchase channels can vary by region. Do not assume a listing is voice-enabled simply because it is described as a Samsung-compatible remote.

A universal infrared remote may restore basic control, but it may not support voice or all Smart Remote functions. Treat it as a fallback for ordinary TV operation, not as an equivalent fix for a failed voice button. If a Samsung Smart Remote still will not pair after the prescribed model-specific steps, Samsung US advises contacting support.
Use the TV while troubleshooting
If the TV is already set up or you can approve its connection, Samsung Canada says the SmartThings app can provide a virtual remote on a phone. The TV’s physical buttons may also provide basic control. Neither option repairs the remote microphone, but either can help you operate the set while you troubleshoot.
