Samsung TV support for 4K at 120 Hz depends on the exact model, screen size, region, and HDMI input—not just the series name or an “HDMI 2.1” label. Before buying, verify the precise model and size in Samsung’s specifications, identify which port supports your target gaming signal, and confirm that your console or PC and HDMI cable support it too.
Check the exact model and size, not just the series
Samsung’s model-specific support information is the safest way to confirm compatibility. A series name alone may hide size exceptions, and a feature available on one input may not be available on the others. Match the full model code, screen size, and country or region version of the TV you plan to buy.
Samsung UK’s support list, last updated July 31, 2023, gives examples of models with 4K/120 Hz Game Mode support. The entries below are historical examples from that UK list, not a complete or current worldwide lineup:

- 2023: QN900C, QN95C, S95C, S90C, QN90C, QN85C, and Q80C, except the 50-inch Q80C. The list identifies HDMI 4 for 4K/120 Hz Game Mode.
- 2022: QN900B, QN800B, QN700B, QN95B, S95B, QN90B, QN85B, Q80B, except the 50-inch Q80B, and Q70B.
- 2021: Samsung lists many QLED and Neo QLED models and The Frame with HDMI 4. Some 8K models, including QN700A, QN800A, QN900A, and QN95A, are listed as supporting the feature on all HDMI inputs.
- 2020: The list includes supported examples, commonly using HDMI 4.
Check Samsung UK’s model list for the specific set you are considering. Samsung’s US guidance also lists supported families from 2019 onward, but notes that some generations support HDMI 2.1 only on HDMI 4 and that compatible 2019 models need current TV software. Use that US GPU compatibility guidance as a reference, then verify the exact regional model in its own documentation.

Find which HDMI port supports 4K/120 Hz
Do not assume every input on a compatible TV supports the same signal. Samsung’s model tables commonly identify HDMI 4 on supported older models, while its setup guidance says some TVs have more than one input for 4K/120 Hz. Follow the exact model’s specifications and look for a port marked for high-refresh gaming; a controller icon may identify it on some sets.
Separate the port requirements for each feature you plan to use. A TV may assign 4K/120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), and enhanced audio return channel (eARC) to different inputs. For example, Samsung’s 2021 QN85A specifications assign FRL 4K/120 Hz to HDMI 4, VRR to all ports, and eARC to HDMI 3. The QN90A sheet likewise places eARC on HDMI 3 and says 4K/120 FPS is not supported on its 43-inch model. These details apply to those configurations only; check the specifications for other models separately.

Check the source device and HDMI cable
Your TV input, console or PC, and cable all need to support the signal you want. Samsung recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 FPS in its US graphics-card guidance, which states: “You must use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for features like 4K @ 120 FPS or 8K @ 60 FPS.” See Samsung US Support’s cable and GPU guidance for context. A suitable cable cannot add a capability that the TV’s port or source device does not support.
Verify the gaming features separately
For each candidate TV, confirm the resolution and refresh rate for the exact size, and check the specific input for each feature you need. HDMI version labeling alone does not answer every practical compatibility question.

- 4K/120 Hz: Is it supported at the size you want, and on which input?
- Higher PC refresh rates: If you want 4K/144 Hz or another rate above 120 Hz, confirm that the specific model and input support it; do not infer it from 120 Hz support.
- VRR: Check whether variable refresh rate is supported and which inputs provide it.
- Game Mode and ALLM: Confirm the gaming mode or Auto Low Latency Mode behavior you need, rather than relying on an HDMI label.
- eARC: Identify its input separately if you connect a soundbar or receiver.
Set up the connection after purchase
- Connect the console or PC to the input Samsung designates for the target high-refresh signal. Use the model documentation, not a port number from another TV.
- Use an appropriate certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 Hz.
- Enable Game Mode if needed. Samsung says console Game Mode may activate automatically; for a PC, it may need to be turned on manually in Quick settings.
- If the target signal is unavailable, check Input Signal Plus for the connected input and install available TV software updates. The menu path and behavior vary by model and software version.
- If you use a soundbar or receiver, connect it to the eARC input specified for that exact TV. Do not assume the eARC and high-refresh gaming inputs are the same.
Samsung’s Canada setup instructions, updated June 17, 2026, describe Game Mode and Input Signal Plus steps. The menus and screenshots can differ by model and software, so use the guidance alongside the TV’s own instructions.

- Whether the exact screen size supports 4K/120 Hz—or a higher refresh rate you specifically need.
- How many HDMI inputs support that signal, and which input supports VRR and eARC.
- Whether Game Mode and any desired ALLM behavior are supported.
- Whether your console or PC and audio equipment can connect to the available suitable inputs without forcing inconvenient cable swaps.
- Whether the information comes from a model- and size-specific specification rather than a broad series-level sales description.
Samsung notes that feature availability can vary by model and country. Its regional support pages are useful starting points, but verify the precise model and size in the documentation for the market where you are buying.
