A Samsung TV backlight failure can be covered, but only if Samsung determines that it is a manufacturing defect in materials or workmanship and the TV is still inside the warranty period that applies to that exact model and sale. Samsung’s standard US terms do not name the backlight as an automatically covered part. Whether you get a repair or replacement depends on diagnosis, the set’s coverage record, and where and how it was bought. The terms described here were checked in early October 2026 and apply to US purchases; outside the US, the local rules govern.
What the manufacturer warranty promises
Samsung’s Standard Limited Warranty for US customers covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty statement itself says: “This limited warranty covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship encountered in normal, reasonable, and except to the extent otherwise expressly provided for in this statement, noncommercial use of this Product” (Samsung Electronics America, Inc., Standard Limited Warranty, Samsung Support US).
Three conditions shape whether that promise reaches your TV:

- Product and seller: the coverage applies to qualifying Samsung products bought from Samsung or an authorized reseller and used in the 50 US states or the District of Columbia, subject to the terms and any separate written agreement.
- Use: the set must be in normal, noncommercial use. A TV used in a business, hotel or similar setting may fall outside the standard terms.
- Time: the defect must appear within the limited-warranty period that applies to that specific model and sale date.
The phrase “backlight failure” does not appear as a standalone coverage promise. Samsung evaluates the fault itself. A cause of the problem that is a defect in materials or workmanship can be covered; a cause that falls under an exclusion cannot.

What is excluded
The standard terms list exclusions that matter most for backlight problems:
- Brightness-related normal aging. Gradual dimming over years of use is treated as normal wear rather than a defect.
- Accidents, misuse, neglect, fire, water and lightning damage.
- Damage caused by unauthorized parts, supplies, installations or repairs.
- Damage from incorrect voltage or from failing to follow the manual’s instructions.
- Reception or signal-delivery problems, which are not hardware faults in the panel.
- Commercial or non-normal consumer use.
A dark picture, uneven brightness or a flickering image is a symptom. It can come from the backlight, the panel, the power board, the main board or a cable, and only Samsung’s assessment can say which. Those symptoms do not by themselves establish that the backlight is defective or that the claim is covered.

How long coverage lasts
There is no single warranty length that applies to every Samsung TV. The parts and labor periods are product-specific, and the Samsung warranty checker displays them once the model is identified. The exact model code and sale date determine the answer.
An older example shows how the split can look. Samsung’s 2018 Frame Series user manual stated one year of parts and one year of labor for that manual’s LCD/LED TV group. That is a dated example for one product cohort, not a current term for your set, and it should not be used as a general duration.

Who decides the remedy
Samsung chooses the remedy under the applicable terms, which can include repair or replacement. Do not assume you will receive a new TV, a specific component, or a refund for a repair you arranged yourself. Warranty service is generally performed by a Samsung-authorized service center. Samsung may ask for dated proof of purchase before it services the set.
How to check your Samsung TV warranty
- Find the complete model code and serial number on the TV’s label or in the menu, and locate the dated receipt or proof of delivery from the seller.
- Open the Samsung warranty checker, sign in or register, and enter the product details. Note the parts and labor periods shown for your model.
- If you bought the TV from a retailer that sold its own extended coverage, find that paperwork. The checker notes that some retailers, such as Costco and Sam’s Club, may offer extended terms. Those terms are set by the retailer and may differ from Samsung’s.
- Follow the manual and Samsung’s online help first, then contact Samsung and describe the symptom in plain terms, for example “picture is dim on the left side and gets worse after 20 minutes.” Ask Samsung for problem-determination and service instructions.
- Record the case number, the date, and the name of the person or system that gave you each instruction.
Diagnose before you open the TV
The most expensive mistake is opening the set or buying a backlight strip before Samsung has assessed the claim. An unauthorized repair can trigger the exclusion for damage caused by unauthorized parts or repairs, and Samsung will not reimburse service performed by others. If the TV is still under warranty, wait for Samsung’s determination before taking any physical step.

If the warranty has ended
Once the parts and labor period for your model has passed, Samsung’s warranty no longer applies to the failure. Request a repair estimate first. Only after an exact-model diagnosis should you consider a backlight strip or repair kit, and only if you accept that a non-authorized repair ends any further claim against the manufacturer. Compare the estimate with any valid service-contract terms and with the cost of a replacement set before deciding.

If you bought the TV outside the US
Samsung says that for a product purchased outside the US, warranty service may be limited to the country of first sale. Contact Samsung in the market where the TV was sold, and check that country’s terms rather than the US ones described here.
