The Samsung The Freestyle+ is a 1 kg Full HD portable projector that Samsung rates at 430 ISO lumens and sells with automatic setup features that adjust the picture to an imperfect wall, floor or ceiling. It is a strong choice for people who want a projector they can move between rooms and aim anywhere with little fiddling. It is a weaker choice for anyone who needs a bright picture in daylight, true off-grid portability without buying extra hardware, or proof of image quality from independent testing, because none of those points is established for this model yet. The US list price was $1,199.99 when Samsung’s US listing was checked on 2026-10-07.
What The Freestyle+ is and who it suits
The Freestyle+ is Samsung’s 2026 entry in its portable Freestyle line, sold as “The Freestyle+ Full HD Portable Projector.” The cylindrical body rotates 180 degrees, so one unit can throw onto a wall, the floor or the ceiling without a separate mount. Samsung positions it for living rooms, bedrooms, dorms, camping spaces and outdoor setups, but the bigger practical benefit is that you can reposition it without rebuilding the room around it.
It suits buyers who move the projector often, who lack a dedicated screen wall, or who want a single device for films, streaming and casual gaming. It is a poorer fit for a home theatre built around a fixed, darkened room, where a larger and brighter projector with independently measured specifications would make more sense.

The model number depends on the market. The US product is SP-LFF3HLAXXZA, and the UK product page lists SP-LFF3HLAXXXU. Samsung announced the global product on 2026-01-01 and said at CES that the rollout would be phased across the first half of 2026. That phased plan was the position at announcement time, not a guarantee that every country had stock in every channel. Samsung announced US availability on 2026-07-17.

The US Samsung listing showed $1,199.99 on 2026-10-07. That is a point-in-time manufacturer listing, not a fixed recommended retail price, and it says nothing about third-party sellers. Check the live price and stock in your own region before buying, since both can change.
Brightness and picture: what Samsung claims
Samsung specifies Full HD resolution, a brightness of up to 430 ISO lumens, PurColor support and HDR10+ support. The company says the brightness is nearly twice that of the previous generation. Those are manufacturer figures. No independent measurement of actual brightness, contrast, colour accuracy, input lag or fan noise for this model is established as of 2026-10-07.
In practice, ISO lumens describe a brightness rating measured under a standard, not the picture you will see in a lit room with curtains open. Expect the image to look best in a dim room. A projector rated at 430 ISO lumens can still look washed out in daylight, so treat that number as a reason to test the room before buying rather than a promise of bright-room viewing.

Most of the setup pitch rests on a set of automatic adjustments that Samsung groups as AI OptiScreen. Samsung’s descriptions are as follows.

Samsung says results depend on the surroundings, and on the UK product page some of these functions must be activated and are off by default. Turn them on in the settings menu and test them in your own room. Automatic correction is most useful on textured walls and most limited on very dark or glossy surfaces, where the projector has less to analyse. Screen Fit is only meaningful if you own a compatible screen; without one, you set the picture size manually through placement.
Placement and screen size
Screen size is set by throw distance. Samsung’s UK material gives the following estimates, which are useful for planning a room but are Samsung’s figures rather than a test result.

Measure from the front of the lens to the wall before you buy. A 100-inch picture needs roughly 2.7 metres of clear depth, which many small rooms do not have. Samsung’s US material describes the maximum as up to 100 inches.
Battery and outdoor use
The projector is light, but it is not battery-powered on its own. Samsung’s UK material says that battery operation requires an external power source. It specifies USB-PD input with at least 50W at 20V. Samsung also sells a Freestyle Battery Base separately and states that operation with that battery is at approximately 80% brightness.

If you plan to use the projector outdoors or away from a socket, budget for the battery at the start. The total cost depends on which battery you choose, so compare it against the projector price rather than treating the projector as a complete outdoor kit.
- Confirm that the battery supports USB-PD and delivers at least 50W at 20V.
- Expect a dimmer picture on battery power, since Samsung’s own figure for its base is about 80% brightness.
- Battery runtime is not established for this model by any source reviewed for this article, so test it with your chosen pack before relying on it for an evening.
Built-in audio and Q-Symphony
Samsung describes built-in 360-degree audio with dual passive woofers. Q-Symphony can synchronise the projector’s sound with compatible Samsung soundbars and Wi-Fi speakers. If you already own a supported Samsung soundbar, that is a sensible upgrade path. Samsung has not shown independent sound-quality tests, and compatibility should be confirmed for your exact soundbar or speaker model before you buy either.

The US announcement lists Smart Hub, streaming apps, Samsung TV Plus, Gaming Hub cloud gaming, Vision AI Companion using Bixby and Gemini, Tap View and Smart View for compatible Galaxy devices, and Apple AirPlay 2. Network-based smart services require a Samsung Account. Samsung TV Plus channels vary by location and can change over time, so the channel list you see may not match the one in a review or product page.
Check each service in your country before buying, particularly streaming apps, cloud gaming and the AI assistant features, since availability is regional.

How to decide whether it is worth the price
Weigh The Freestyle+ against alternatives on these points, which are the ones that actually change the outcome:
- Brightness in your room: Samsung’s 430 ISO lumen rating is the only brightness figure available. Judge it against how dark your room can be.
- Placement needs: the rotation and automatic correction are the main reasons to choose it over a fixed projector.
- Power strategy: add the cost of a compatible USB-PD battery if you need portable use.
- Audio: decide whether you will use the built-in speakers or pair a compatible Samsung soundbar.
- Total price: include any battery, screen or soundbar in the comparison, not just the $1,199.99 projector price.
The Freestyle+ makes the most sense for buyers who value placement flexibility and automatic setup and who can live with a rating-based brightness figure. Buyers who need proven picture performance, daylight viewing or self-contained off-grid use should wait for independent testing or consider a different class of projector.
As Hun Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, put it in the company’s announcement, the aim is to create displays that “adapt naturally to how people live and move between spaces.” That is a fair description of the design intent, but it is positioning rather than proof of performance.
Samsung’s US product listing and announcements are the primary sources for the specifications and dates above. Check them directly for current pricing, model numbers and regional service details before buying.
