Choose the Samsung T9 if your computer supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and you regularly move large files; choose the Samsung T7 Shield if IP65 dust and water resistance matters more than peak speed. The T9’s advertised ceiling is higher, but a USB-C port alone does not guarantee the interface needed to reach it. Both drives carry Samsung’s controlled-test claim of drop resistance up to 3 meters, while only the T7 Shield has a published IP rating.

Which drive is faster in real use?
T9: higher peak speed with the right host
Samsung rates the T9 at up to 2,000MB/s sequential read. Its rated write speed is up to 1,950MB/s for the 1TB and 2TB models, and up to 2,000MB/s for the 4TB model. Samsung says these maximums require a host and cable that support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and UASP. The connection must support that standard end to end: a USB-C connector by itself does not establish Gen 2×2 capability.

T7 Shield: lower ceiling, more widely useful 10Gbps link
The T7 Shield is rated for up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write, with USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 at 10Gbps. Samsung also conditions its maximum-speed figures on a compatible USB 3.2 Gen 2 host and UASP. Actual throughput depends on the host, cable, and operating conditions.

Independent testing gives a useful reminder that maximum ratings do not describe every transfer. PC Gamer’s 2026 guide reported an initial peak-speed advantage for the T9, but both drives were close to 1,000MB/s in its cited IOMeter sequential tests after that initial boost. That is the publication’s result on its test setup, not a universal benchmark. PC Gamer’s portable SSD guide provides its testing context.
When is the T7 Shield’s protection worth choosing?
The T7 Shield is the clearer choice for dusty locations, travel, or field work where exposure to water is a concern. Samsung gives it an IP65 rating based on controlled internal testing. The rating is not a promise that it can withstand every exposure, and Samsung says liquid or dust damage is not covered by warranty. Its IP65 rating is a meaningful distinction from the T9, for which Samsung’s comparison lists drop resistance but no IP rating.

Samsung claims both drives can withstand drops of up to 3 meters in controlled testing. That does not make either drive damage-proof: Samsung states that damage caused by drops is not covered by warranty. Samsung’s limited warranty information explains coverage terms.

How do warranty, size, and capacity compare?
Samsung lists a five-year limited warranty for the T9 and three years for the T7 Shield across the capacities shown. The longer term gives the T9 an advantage on paper, but neither warranty is accidental-damage insurance. The T7 Shield is also 24g lighter according to Samsung’s listed weights: 98g versus 122g for the T9. Their listed dimensions are similar, and both are available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities.

Compare the same capacity when checking prices. Current price and stock change, and Samsung’s 1TB T7 Shield US listing showed $287.99 with delivery and pickup unavailable when accessed in 2026; that snapshot is not a market-wide price or a live comparison with the T9. Samsung US’s 1TB T7 Shield listing reflects that specific listing.
Which one should you buy for your devices and workflow?
Choose the T9 for frequent large transfers
- Pick the T9 if your computer’s actual USB specification supports Gen 2×2, and you often move large files where its higher rated ceiling can help.
- Do not pay for its peak-speed potential expecting it from a Gen 2×1 or slower port; the host and cable must support Gen 2×2 and UASP.
Choose the T7 Shield for dust and water exposure
- Pick the T7 Shield when the published IP65 rating matters more than the T9’s higher speed ceiling.
- Its lighter listed weight may also suit a carry-everywhere setup, though the two drives have similar dimensions.
For backups, game libraries, and everyday storage
For ordinary backups or a game library, neither model is automatically the better choice. Match capacity, compare current prices, then decide whether your host supports Gen 2×2 and whether IP65 protection matters for where you use the drive.

For iPhone 15 Pro video recording
Samsung says its internal evaluation found both models able to record ProRes 4K at 60fps on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max at room temperature, subject to stated power and sustained-performance requirements. Samsung recommends using the supplied genuine USB-C cable. This claim applies to those phones and conditions; check the exact phone, camera app, cable, and recording workflow before relying on it. Samsung’s Portable SSD FAQ gives the company’s compatibility guidance.
Compatibility and setup notes
Samsung lists Windows, macOS, and Android compatibility for the T9, and broad PC, Mac, Android, and game-console use for the T7 Shield; compatibility can vary by device. Samsung says its portable SSDs can work with USB 2.0 devices, but a slower interface limits performance.
