Samsung’s SM951 is the faster, performance-focused OEM SSD family; PM951 is a lower-rated, lower-cost OEM family. Both are M.2 2280 PCIe drives, but the physical shape alone does not guarantee compatibility. Your laptop or motherboard must support the drive’s PCIe lane wiring and protocol, and an SM951 may be either NVMe or AHCI.

PM951 vs SM951 at a glance

Feature Samsung PM951 Samsung SM951
Product position OEM PCIe SSD family aimed at lower cost Premium, performance-oriented OEM PCIe SSD family
Form factor M.2 2280 M.2 2280
Interface PCIe; verify the exact drive and host documentation PCIe Gen 3.0 x4
Protocol Check the label and system documentation Available in NVMe and AHCI versions
Published capacities 128GB, 256GB, 512GB 128GB, 256GB, 512GB
Sequential read Up to 1,050 MB/s Up to 2,150 MB/s in Samsung’s brochure; the 2015 NVMe launch announcement reported up to 2,260 MB/s
Sequential write Up to 560 MB/s Up to 1,550 MB/s in Samsung’s brochure; the 2015 NVMe launch announcement reported up to 1,600 MB/s
Random performance Up to 250K read IOPS and 144K write IOPS Not stated in the supplied SM951 figures

All throughput and IOPS figures are Samsung’s maximum published ratings, not guaranteed results in a particular laptop. Host PCIe lanes, firmware, cooling and workload can reduce performance.

Is SM951 faster than PM951?

Yes. On Samsung’s published sequential ratings, the SM951 is roughly twice as fast: up to 2,150 MB/s read and 1,550 MB/s write versus 1,050 MB/s read and 560 MB/s write for PM951. Samsung’s 2015 announcement gave the NVMe SM951 slightly higher maximums of 2,260 MB/s read and 1,600 MB/s write.

Those are sequential-transfer ceilings. Booting Windows, launching applications and handling many small files depend heavily on latency, queue depth, the host controller and the workload, so a laptop will not automatically deliver the headline numbers.

SM951 NVMe versus AHCI

SM951 was sold in both NVMe and AHCI-based PCIe versions. NVMe and AHCI are protocols, not M.2 sizes. Two drives can look identical while requiring different firmware support from the computer.

How to identify the protocol

  • Read the complete label, including the model and part number; listings that only say “SM951” are incomplete.
  • Check the laptop or motherboard manual for supported PCIe-storage protocols and boot support.
  • In a working system, identify the controller in the operating system’s storage or device-management tools, but do not rely on software detection when the machine cannot boot.

An AHCI SM951 is not interchangeable with an NVMe SM951 merely because both use PCIe. Confirm the exact variant before buying.

Will a PM951 or SM951 work in your M.2 slot?

Only if the slot is electrically compatible. M.2 2280 describes the 22 mm width and 80 mm length; it does not say whether the socket carries SATA, PCIe, or which PCIe lanes and protocols the firmware supports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility checklist

  1. Confirm the socket accepts an 80 mm (2280) module and that the mounting screw position matches.
  2. Verify that the socket supports PCIe storage. A SATA-only M.2 slot should not be assumed to work with either drive.
  3. Check the number and generation of PCIe lanes. The SM951 is specified for PCIe Gen 3.0 x4; a narrower or differently wired slot may limit speed or fail to enumerate.
  4. For an SM951, match the drive’s NVMe or AHCI protocol to the host’s documented support.
  5. Check whether the system firmware can boot from that protocol and whether a BIOS update is required.
  6. Confirm the exact capacity and part number, then compare the seller’s return terms before installing.

If the manufacturer’s service manual does not clearly identify the slot as PCIe/NVMe or PCIe/AHCI, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from the connector key.

Which drive should you choose?

Choose SM951 when

  • Your system explicitly supports the SM951’s PCIe x4 connection and the correct NVMe or AHCI variant.
  • You regularly move large files or run storage-heavy workloads where higher sequential bandwidth matters.
  • The listing provides a complete model/part number and a credible used-drive return policy.

Choose PM951 when

  • Your host supports the exact PM951 variant and you find it substantially cheaper.
  • Your workload is ordinary office work, web use or gaming, where both are already much faster than a hard drive and peak sequential speed is not the main constraint.
  • You have verified the drive’s condition, firmware and return coverage.

Consider neither when

  • The slot is M.2 SATA-only or the protocol cannot be confirmed.
  • You need a new drive with a straightforward manufacturer warranty; these are legacy OEM products and many listings are used or refurbished.
  • The price approaches that of a current retail NVMe SSD with known support and warranty.

What to check in a used or refurbished listing

Search using the exact model and part number rather than only “Samsung M.2 SSD.” For PM951, verify the MZVLV part-number family, capacity and host PCIe support. For SM951, make the NVMe-versus-AHCI distinction explicit.

  • Ask for a clear photograph of the label and both sides of the module.
  • Confirm whether the item is used, refurbished or pulled from an OEM system.
  • Request the seller’s testing details and check that the return window covers installation and detection problems.
  • Do not assume identical firmware, endurance history or warranty terms across batches.

Current inventory, authenticity, street price and warranty conditions vary by seller and were not established for these discontinued OEM families, so verify them on the live listing.

Bottom line for a laptop upgrade

SM951 wins on published performance, but PM951 can be the sensible bargain if its exact protocol and PCIe wiring match your laptop. The decisive step is not comparing the M.2 notch or capacity; it is matching the complete drive part number and protocol to the computer’s documented PCIe-storage support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace a PM951 with an SM951?

Only after checking protocol, PCIe lane wiring, firmware boot support and physical 2280 clearance. An NVMe and AHCI SM951 are not automatically interchangeable.

Does every M.2 2280 slot support PM951 or SM951?

No. M.2 2280 is a mechanical size. The slot must support PCIe storage and the drive’s required protocol; SATA-only slots are not sufficient.

Why is my SM951 slower than Samsung’s rating?

The figures are vendor maximums. Laptop PCIe lanes, firmware, thermal limits and workload can all produce lower real-world throughput.
