Sound Assistant is optional, not a prerequisite for basic volume control. Galaxy’s built-in settings already let you adjust ringtone, notification, media, and system volume. Sound Assistant adds controls such as individual app volume, a customizable volume panel, and finer adjustment steps. Samsung’s Separate app sound is a separate built-in feature for routing one app’s media to another audio device.
What Galaxy’s built-in sound settings already do
Samsung’s sound settings provide category-level controls for ringtone, notifications, media, and system sounds, along with other sound and vibration options. The exact menus and available options can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s Galaxy sound settings guide also notes that some audio options may require a headset or Galaxy Buds to be connected.
Android’s underlying audio model likewise uses separate streams for categories including music, alarms, notifications, incoming-call ringtone, system sounds, in-call volume, and DTMF. Apps that use the same stream can be affected together when its volume changes. That platform model does not mean every Android manufacturer provides the same settings interface or a built-in slider for each app. Android’s audio-output documentation describes this behavior for developers.
What Sound Assistant adds
Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing describes Sound Assistant as an optional set of additional audio controls for supported Galaxy devices. Its listed features include individual application volume, 150 volume steps, a floating equalizer, personalized sound settings, mono audio and left/right balance, and customization of the volume panel. The listing also describes switching an app’s audio output between Bluetooth and the phone speaker through its floating volume dialog, plus multi-sound playback. These are listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature is available on every Galaxy model, software version, or app. Samsung Galaxy Store: Sound Assistant

| Need | Galaxy built-in settings | Sound Assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust ringtone, notification, media, and system volume | Yes; Samsung documents category sliders. | Can add a different volume panel or control behavior. |
| Set a different volume for one app | Samsung’s reviewed support guidance does not document a per-app loudness slider. | Samsung lists individual application volume. |
| Route an app’s media to another output | Separate app sound can send a selected app’s media to a separate audio device. | The listing describes switching an app’s output between Bluetooth and speaker via a floating volume dialog. |
| Make finer volume adjustments | Ordinary category sliders are documented. | The listing advertises 150 volume steps; that specification does not establish an audible sound-quality improvement. |
| Use sound effects or customize the volume interface | Samsung documents sound quality/effects and other device controls. | The listing includes a floating equalizer, personalized sound settings, and volume-panel customization. |
| Play audio from multiple apps at once | Separate app sound is described as routing one selected app to another output. | The listing describes multi-sound playback, extended from dual app sound; support can depend on the device and apps. |
Separate app sound is routing, not per-app volume
Samsung’s built-in Separate app sound feature sends the media from a selected app to an audio device separate from the phone’s main output. It is useful when you want one app’s sound to go to a connected Bluetooth device while other phone audio continues through the main output. It changes where that app plays, not the app’s individual loudness control.
Samsung’s setup guidance says Bluetooth devices appear as choices only while connected. Menu names and availability may vary by device and software. See Samsung’s Separate app sound instructions for the feature and its connection requirement.

What you lose if you skip or remove Sound Assistant
Where supported, you lose access to Sound Assistant’s additions: individual app volume, its finer-step control, floating equalizer, expanded volume-panel customization, app output controls, and listed multi-sound playback. The cited Samsung materials describe category volume controls and Separate app sound as Galaxy system settings separately from the app; they do not establish that removing Sound Assistant removes either one.

Android’s developer documentation captures the user expectation behind per-app control: “Users expect to be able to control the volume of an audio app.” That expectation is not a promise that every Android phone exposes the same control. Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing identifies version 8.5.00.2 dated May 22, 2026, and notes that some devices may not be supported; check the listing and your phone’s menus for current compatibility and features.
