Samsung’s Sensors Off feature is a Developer options Quick Settings tile that blocks apps from using the camera, microphone, and many Android-managed sensors—but it does not guarantee a hardware-level shutdown, and phone calls can still use the microphone. Its availability and menu placement can vary by Galaxy model and software version.
What Sensors Off does on a Samsung Galaxy
Sensors Off is an Android developer tile, not a per-app permission screen. Android’s reference implementation blocks app access through camera, audio, and SensorManager services. Depending on the device, the manufacturer may customize which sensors are covered or omit the tile.
When enabled, an app’s camera request can fail, microphone input is silenced, and apps stop receiving events from covered sensors. This can interrupt camera use, recording, voice input, auto-rotation, motion-aware features, and proximity-dependent behavior. The exact effects depend on the app, sensor, and device.

The feature blocks access through specified system services; it is not a promise that sensor hardware is powered off or that every vendor-specific sensor path is covered. Android also notes that telephony functions do not use AudioPolicyService and can still access the microphone during phone calls.

How to enable the Sensors Off tile
1. Turn on Developer options
- Open Settings and tap About phone.
- Tap Software information.
- Tap Build number seven times. If prompted, enter your screen-lock credentials.
- Return to the main Settings menu. Developer options should appear near the bottom.
These steps follow Samsung Canada’s instructions. Samsung cautions that Developer options are advanced settings, are not supported for ordinary use, and may affect phone performance. Change only the setting you need.
2. Add Sensors Off to Quick Settings
- In Settings, open Developer options.
- Tap Quick settings developer tiles.
- Enable Sensors off.
- Open Quick Settings and look for the tile. Tap it to turn the feature on or off.
Android documents this tile and its Developer options location, but Samsung does not guarantee that every Galaxy model or software build includes it. The label or placement may differ. Samsung’s Developer options guidance explains how to expose the menu, while Android’s Sensors Off documentation describes the tile itself.

Quick Settings layout also varies. Samsung says the panel experience changed with One UI 7: newer devices may separate notifications from Quick Settings, while devices on One UI 6.1.1 or earlier use a combined swipe layout. Check your software version and edit the Quick Settings panel if needed; there is no single swipe gesture that applies to every Galaxy phone. See Samsung’s Quick Settings guidance.
What happens to camera, microphone, and sensor access
Camera
If an app is using the camera when Sensors Off is enabled, Android reports an error and closes the camera device. New camera requests can also receive an error. Camera-dependent features may stop until the tile is turned off.

Microphone
For apps using Android’s audio service, microphone requests can be allowed but return silence. An active recording may be silenced rather than stopped with an error. This is not a hardware microphone disconnect: Android specifically documents that phone calls can still access the microphone.
SensorManager sensors
Covered sensors stop sending data to apps: continuous sensors cease delivering events, on-change sensors stop reporting changes, and trigger sensors stop generating new events (though an event already in progress completes). A flush can complete without returning new sensor data. After Sensors Off is disabled, existing listeners can resume receiving normal data.

These behaviors are described in Android’s technical documentation. A Galaxy manufacturer can customize support, so behavior should not be assumed identical across devices.

If your goal is only to restrict camera or microphone access, Samsung’s privacy controls may be less disruptive. The Privacy Dashboard can show recent camera, microphone, and location permission activity and provide per-app controls. Samsung also describes global camera and microphone access controls that can disable access for all apps.

These controls are narrower than Sensors Off: they focus on camera or microphone permissions, whereas Sensors Off also affects covered SensorManager sensors. Samsung’s instructions are in its Privacy Dashboard guidance. The appropriate option depends on whether you want per-app control or broader sensor disruption.
Why a Galaxy may not show Sensors Off
- The tile is not enabled: Check Settings > Developer options > Quick settings developer tiles.
- Your software build differs: Menu names and locations can vary by model, carrier, and software version.
- Your device does not include it: Android documents the feature, but that does not establish availability on every Samsung phone.
- The Quick Settings panel layout changed: Inspect the panel and its edit controls for your One UI version rather than relying on a universal swipe instruction.
If the tile is present but camera, recording, or sensor-dependent functions stop working, turn Sensors Off back off and check whether those functions resume.
