To start Safe mode on most Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, open the Power menu, touch and hold Power off, then tap Safe mode. If the device is off, turn it on and hold Volume down when the Samsung logo appears. A “Safe mode” label at the bottom-left of the screen confirms it is active.
Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and wireless service provider, so your buttons or menu may look different. The steps below use Samsung’s official Safe mode instructions.
Start Safe mode from the Power menu
- Open the Power menu. On a device with a regular Power button, press and hold it. You can also press the Side button and Volume down together. On devices without a dedicated Power button, swipe down from the top-right of the screen to open Quick settings, then tap the Power icon.
- Touch and hold Power off. Keep holding the on-screen Power off icon until the Safe mode option appears.
- Tap Safe mode. The device will restart. Look for the “Safe mode” label at the bottom-left of the screen to confirm the mode is on.
Start Safe mode while turning on the device
- Turn off the phone or tablet, then turn it back on.
- When the Samsung logo appears, press and hold Volume down.
- Release the button when the device finishes starting and check for “Safe mode” at the bottom-left. If the label does not appear, repeat the steps.
Use Safe mode to check for app problems
Samsung says that in Safe mode, the device does not run third-party apps. Use the phone or tablet as you normally would and check whether the freezing, crashing, lag, or other problem still occurs.

- If the problem goes away: A downloaded app may be responsible. Uninstall recently installed or updated apps one at a time, checking normal operation after each removal.
- If the problem remains: Downloaded apps may not be the cause. For a problem that persists in Safe mode during boot-loop troubleshooting, Samsung says a hardware issue is likely and advises visiting a walk-in service center or scheduling a repair. That guidance applies to that troubleshooting context; it is not a diagnosis of every symptom. See Samsung’s boot-loop troubleshooting guidance.
Safe mode does not delete downloaded apps. They are simply prevented from running while the mode is active.
