The Samsung R85H pairs a 4K, 144 Hz feature set with a novel Micro RGB backlight, but its most important independent-review finding is a picture-quality drawback: visible color cross-talk can create distracting artifacts. RTINGS purchased and tested the 65-inch model, not every size. Its findings indicate that the R85H may appeal to buyers who prioritize refresh-rate features and color saturation, but it is not an easy recommendation without checking the artifact trade-off and current price.

Is the Samsung R85H worth buying?

It depends on what you value. Samsung lists a strong gaming-oriented specification set, including 144 Hz refresh with VRR, but those specifications do not establish how well the TV handles difficult scenes. In RTINGS’ review, the central concern is color cross-talk from the RGB Mini LED backlight: color can look more saturated with suitable content, while the backlight can also produce distracting artifacts.

RTINGS purchased and tested the 65-inch R85H. Its review, published August 20, 2026 and updated October 2, 2026 for Test Bench 2.3, says the findings should apply to the 55-, 75-, 85- and 100-inch family sizes. That is a reviewer’s assessment based on the tested 65-inch unit, not a separate test of each size. RTINGS concludes that it sees little reason to choose the R85H given the alternatives and pricing it considered at the time; that comparison is time-sensitive, so check current prices before deciding.

What is the R85H, and which model code matches each size?

The R85H is Samsung’s 2026 Micro RGB 4K television line. The four US size-specific model codes in this review are:

RTINGS also lists a 100-inch family variant, but it is outside the four model codes covered in the title. Confirm the code on the retailer listing or product label before ordering; screen size alone is not a reliable way to distinguish listings.

What do independent tests say about picture quality?

Color cross-talk is the key caveat

RTINGS identifies color cross-talk associated with the RGB Mini LED backlight as the R85H’s main drawback. The effect can show up as distracting color artifacts. RTINGS notes that the technology can improve color saturation with suitable content, but says the TV’s small zone count makes cross-talk more visible than with some competing approaches. That means “Micro RGB” should not be treated as a guarantee of cleaner color or better overall picture quality.

Processing has strengths and weaknesses

RTINGS reports good processing, good upscaling of low-resolution sources such as DVDs, little banding, excellent gradient handling, and good HDR processing. It also finds that the TV does not clean up low-quality streaming compression well, and that smoothing can reduce fine detail. If you often watch heavily compressed streams, the source quality and processing trade-off may matter more than the headline resolution.

The available information does not provide a set of independently measured brightness, black-level, or haloing figures for the R85H. Do not infer those results from Samsung’s feature names or from the specifications of a different model. When comparing TVs in person or using test reviews, examine dark scenes for black level and haloing, bright scenes for glare handling, and saturated edges for color artifacts.

What features does Samsung specify?

Samsung’s US product listing describes the R85H as a 4K Micro RGB television with a Micro RGB AI Engine, Micro RGB HDR+, and Motion Xcelerator 144 Hz. For the 85-inch model, Samsung lists the following hardware and connection features:

  • 3840 × 2160 resolution.
  • 144 Hz refresh with VRR support; Samsung also lists DLG 240 Hz.
  • Four HDMI inputs supporting up to 4K at 144 Hz, including eARC support.
  • Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and Ethernet.
  • Two USB-A ports and FreeSync Premium Pro.

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results. Samsung also promotes Vision AI Companion and Micro RGB Precision Color 100 as product highlights; the available independent-review summary does not establish those marketing claims as measured outcomes.

Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report describes the R85H as an “essential model” intended to establish and expand its Micro RGB line while delivering an “outstanding color experience.” The same report lists Micro RGB Color Booster Pro, 144 Hz VRR, Object Tracking Sound Lite, AI-based object separation and use of the QN80 platform for cost efficiency. This is Samsung Electronics’ product positioning in its 2026 first-quarter interim report, not an independent assessment.

How does the R85H compare with OLED and other Mini LED TVs?

RTINGS’ conclusion compares the R85H with the LG C6 OLED 2026, which it said was available for about the same price, and the TCL QM8K Mini LED, which it said cost less. Those are RTINGS’ price observations and recommendation context at the time of its review—not current quotes. The available information does not establish a full, directly comparable specification or test table for all three models, so a simple winner claim would overstate what is known here.

For a practical comparison, use these decision points rather than assuming a backlight label determines the winner:

What changes if you step up to the Samsung R95H?

The R95H is Samsung’s higher-tier Micro RGB model, not simply another name for the R85H. Samsung’s product pages distinguish the tiers: the R95H uses a Pro AI Engine, HDR Pro, 165 Hz and Glare Free, while the R85H uses the standard AI Engine, HDR+ and 144 Hz. RTINGS says its R95H testing also shows improvements in brightness, color volume, local dimming, black uniformity, haloing and processing. Treat those as RTINGS’ comparative test findings; Samsung’s feature labels alone do not prove a measured performance advantage.

If considering the step up, compare the extra cost for your chosen size against the specific picture improvements you care about. The available evidence does not establish a current price difference.

How much does the R85H cost?

Samsung offer snapshots in the available information were inconsistent, so the figures are not reliable current prices or recommended retail prices. One 65-inch search result showed $1,599.99 after a displayed $500 discount from $2,099.99; one 85-inch result showed $2,799.99 after a displayed $1,200 discount from $3,999.99. These were volatile page observations, not guaranteed offers. Check the exact size and model code with the seller before buying.

Who should consider the Samsung R85H?

It may suit you if

  • You want Samsung’s listed 144 Hz VRR feature set and compatible gaming connections.
  • You value the possibility of enhanced color saturation and are willing to assess the cross-talk concern carefully.
  • You watch a mix of content where upscaling and gradient handling matter.

Look elsewhere or compare more carefully if

  • Visible color artifacts would distract you, particularly in scenes with saturated edges.
  • You mostly watch low-quality compressed streams and expect the TV to remove their artifacts without detail loss.
  • Your decision depends on independently measured brightness, black level or glare performance that is not established by the evidence summarized here.
