On a Samsung Galaxy phone with a microSD slot, use My Files to copy or move pictures to the card. Open My Files, find and select the photos, choose Copy or Move, then open SD card and finish with the matching action. First confirm that your exact phone model supports microSD; not every Galaxy does.
Check that your Galaxy supports a microSD card
Samsung says microSD support varies by model. For example, its support guidance notes that Galaxy S21 models do not have an SD card slot. Check your phone’s official specifications before buying a card; the model is unspecified here, so a compatible card type and maximum capacity cannot be named universally. Once a card is inserted, it should appear as SD card in My Files. Samsung’s microSD compatibility guidance and file-management instructions cover these model differences.
Move or copy the pictures in My Files
- Insert the compatible card into the phone’s microSD slot. If the phone has no slot, these steps cannot add one.
- Open My Files and locate the pictures. Camera photos are commonly in Internal storage > DCIM > Camera. You can also check Images or use My Files search; pictures saved by other apps may be in different folders. Samsung’s My Files guide describes finding and organizing files.
- Select the photos. Touch and hold one picture, then select any additional files you want to transfer.
- Choose Copy or Move. Select Copy to keep the phone originals, or Move to relocate the selected files.
- Choose the card destination. Return to My Files Home, tap SD card, open the folder where you want the pictures, then tap Copy here or Move here.
- Check the destination. Open the folder on the card and confirm the pictures are accessible. If you chose Copy and later want to reclaim phone storage, remove the originals only after confirming the card copies work.
Samsung’s US instructions say these file transfers are performed in My Files, and that the SD card location appears when a card is inserted. Menu names and screens can vary by model, software version, and region. See Samsung’s transfer instructions if the labels differ.
Choose Copy for a backup or Move to relocate photos

Why the Gallery method may look different
Samsung UK documents a Gallery workflow on supported device and software combinations: create an album, choose the SD card as its storage location, then select pictures in Pictures and move them to that album. Samsung US instead directs users to My Files for file moves and copies. If your Gallery does not offer an SD-card album or move option, use the My Files procedure above rather than assuming the Gallery menu is universal. If the SD card does not appear
- Check that the card is fully inserted and that your exact Galaxy model supports microSD.
- Return to My Files Home and look for SD card; Samsung says this location appears when a card is inserted.
- If the phone does not support a card slot, consider USB OTG flash storage or another external storage connection only if your device supports it. Samsung notes that support varies by device; this is an alternative, not a way to add a microSD slot. Samsung’s external-storage guidance.
