To check a Samsung phone for water damage, power it off, remove the SIM or microSD tray, and shine a flashlight into the slot to inspect the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI), if your model has an accessible one. Samsung says a solid pink, purple, or red LDI indicates liquid exposure; white, or white with light pink or purple marks, indicates no exposure. The LDI shows exposure, not how much internal damage occurred. A water-drop icon is different: it signals moisture detected in the USB port and is not, by itself, proof of widespread water damage.
Check the Liquid Damage Indicator in the SIM tray
Samsung’s support guidance places the LDI in the SIM or microSD tray area on models where it is present and accessible. Its location and availability vary by model, so check your model-specific instructions if the tray layout differs. Use the supplied SIM ejector tool rather than forcing the tray.
- Power off the phone.
- Eject the SIM or microSD tray. Locate the tray and use the supplied ejector tool.
- Shine a flashlight into the slot. Look for the small LDI and compare its color with Samsung’s guidance.
- Arrange service if it indicates exposure. The indicator does not measure the severity of internal damage.
Samsung Saudi Arabia Support says a solid pink, purple, or red indicator means liquid exposure. A white indicator, or white with light pink or purple marks, is described as no moisture exposure. A white LDI does not replace a service diagnosis when the phone has symptoms or you know it was exposed.

Understand what each sign can—and cannot—tell you

What the water-drop icon means
The water-drop icon or moisture warning concerns the USB charging port. Disconnect the charger when it appears; do not treat the alert as a diagnosis of the whole phone. Samsung Support notes that “High humidity environments may also trigger the warning even without direct water exposure.”
If the warning continues after the port is dry, contact Samsung support. Do not put objects into the port to try to clear moisture.

What to do after a liquid exposure
If the phone shows a port-moisture warning
- Unplug the charger and any accessories.
- Gently wipe the phone with a soft, dry cloth and let it air-dry in a well-ventilated place. Samsung’s guidance also describes gently shaking the device with the port facing down.
- Wait until the phone and port are completely dry before reconnecting anything. Samsung UK says moisture may evaporate in approximately 1 to 2 hours, but do not use that estimate as permission to charge if moisture remains.
If a water-resistant model was exposed to dirty water or another liquid
Only follow this rinse guidance if your specific phone supports water resistance. Samsung US advises rinsing the device with clean water for 1 to 3 minutes, then wiping and drying it completely. Check your model’s instructions if you are unsure whether it is water-resistant.
If the phone is not water-resistant, or moisture may remain inside
Turn it off immediately, remove removable cards and accessories, wipe the exterior dry, and seek inspection. Do not turn it back on if moisture may remain inside, even after the exterior has dried.

Do not use these drying methods
- Hair dryers, heaters, or other heat sources
- Compressed air
- Chemical cleaners or abrasive materials
- Objects inserted into the charging port
Samsung warns that improper drying or cleaning can cause discoloration, corrosion, or permanent damage. Keep the device uncharged until it is completely dry.
Water resistance is limited and model-specific
Water resistance is not a guarantee against damage in every exposure, and it may weaken with ordinary wear. Samsung Canada gives these reference conditions: IPX7 is rated for 30 minutes at 1 meter, and IPX8 for 30 minutes at 1.5 meters. These are laboratory test conditions, not a promise for every Galaxy phone or real-world situation.

Samsung says its IPX8 example was tested in still fresh water without movement under IEC 60529 certification conditions. Greater depth, pressure, longer exposure, contaminants, and the phone’s condition can affect protection. Ratings and eligible models vary, so check the exact model and regional Samsung support page rather than assuming all Samsung phones share the same rating.
Check warranty and repair coverage in your region
Samsung Saudi Arabia’s LDI guidance states: “Liquid damage is considered physical damage and is not covered under the Samsung Limited Warranty.” Warranty terms depend on your country and applicable terms, so check the policy for your region before deciding what a repair will cost.

Samsung US describes Samsung Care+ as providing accidental-damage protection beyond the standard limited warranty and says accidental physical or liquid damage can be submitted as a service claim. Coverage, availability, claims, deductibles, and required documents vary by country, region, and plan. Check your own plan’s terms before assuming a liquid-damage repair is covered.
