If your Samsung phone loses battery overnight, there isn’t one fix that works for every Galaxy. Background apps, weak or unstable signal, setup activity and battery wear can all contribute. Start by checking what used power, then try targeted, reversible changes. Samsung’s support guidance describes possible causes and controls; it does not identify the cause on any particular phone or verify a specific overnight routine.
Check what used battery before changing settings
Open Settings > Battery and review the battery-use details or app list. Menu names and screens can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Look for an app or process with activity during the hours the phone was idle; Samsung recommends reviewing app usage as an early troubleshooting step (Samsung UK Support: Why is my Samsung Galaxy phone battery draining fast?).
A high-use app is a lead, not proof that it is faulty: some apps need to sync or deliver notifications in the background. If no app stands out, consider reception, recent setup or updates, and the battery’s condition rather than applying restrictions indiscriminately.
Consider signal and recent setup activity
Samsung lists weak or unstable network signal as a possible cause of faster drain. It also notes that 5G service can use more battery when the phone connects across multiple networks. If the drain occurs in a place with weak 5G coverage, you can temporarily try a different network mode and compare the result on your own phone. Treat this as a reversible troubleshooting experiment, not a universal recommendation to turn off 5G.

Initial setup activity can also affect battery use. If the problem began after setting up the phone, restoring data or installing updates, check again after that activity has finished before making lasting changes. Samsung’s support page covers these possible causes but does not give a universal overnight-loss figure or diagnose an individual device.
Restrict background activity only for apps that can tolerate it
For apps you rarely use, Samsung provides sleeping and deep sleeping controls. Sleeping apps may have some background activity restricted; deep sleeping apps do not run in the background and work only when opened manually. Depending on the app, these limits can delay notifications, syncing or other background work.
Review the app’s role before placing it in a restricted state. Messaging, security, health and work apps may need timely background access. Settings labels and available controls vary by device and software version. Use Power saving mode as a deliberate trade-off
Power saving mode reduces background activity and may disable high-power features such as Always On Display. It can help limit drain, but it can also affect app behavior, notifications and syncing. If you use it overnight, check whether essential alerts and background tasks still work as you expect. Build a Galaxy Routine around your own needs
Galaxy Routines can trigger actions when chosen conditions are met, but the exact features and Settings path depend on model and software version. Samsung documents the automation capability; the available sources do not establish a particular overnight battery-saving recipe. Avoid assuming a specific action or condition will be available on every Galaxy (Samsung Developers: Samsung Routines).
A useful approach is to first identify a likely cause, then automate only a change you have found acceptable manually. For example, if you have decided that limiting a particular app’s background activity overnight is acceptable, check whether your phone’s Routines supports the relevant condition and action. Verify the routine’s behavior and confirm that notifications or sync you rely on are not being interrupted.

When to check battery health or seek support
Battery capacity gradually declines with repeated charging and discharging, and Samsung says that lost capacity cannot be restored. Its UK support page describes the battery as “a consumable component” (Samsung UK Support: Why is my Samsung Galaxy phone battery draining fast?). That general fact does not show that a particular phone needs a replacement battery.
