Start with Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Battery, then check which apps are using power. Restrict background activity only for apps that do not need timely alerts or syncing. If app and setting changes do not explain the drain, consider reception, recent setup activity and battery condition before seeking service. Samsung menu names vary by Galaxy model and software version.
1. Find which apps are using the battery
Open Settings and look for Device care or Battery and device care. Tap Battery, then review the battery-usage details. The screen can help you spot an app using more power than you would expect.
Samsung’s support instructions note that screens and labels can differ by model, software version and region. If those exact labels are not on your phone, look in Settings for “Battery” or “Device care.” Samsung’s guide to troubleshooting faster battery drain describes the battery-use checks.
2. Limit background activity for apps that do not need it
If an app appears to be using power while you are not actively using it, check Settings > Battery for Background usage limits. Depending on the phone, options may include putting unused apps to sleep, viewing sleeping apps, adding apps to Deep sleeping apps, or keeping them in Never sleeping apps. Samsung says deep sleeping apps run only when opened. The available controls and names vary.

Apply restrictions selectively. Sleeping or deep-sleeping an app can delay or prevent its notifications and background syncing. Do not restrict a messaging, security, work or other app if you rely on it to alert you or update in the background. Samsung describes these options in its Galaxy battery optimisation guidance.
3. Turn off features you are not using
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, location services (GPS) and auto-sync can contribute to battery use. That does not mean any one of them is necessarily causing your drain. Turn off only features you are not using, and check whether battery use changes under your normal routine.
4. Use Power saving mode when you need a broader reduction
Power saving mode can restrict background data for unused apps and disable high-power features such as Always On Display. That can help stretch a charge, but it may also limit notifications or other background activity. Use it when the trade-off is worthwhile rather than treating it as a diagnosis of the cause.

5. Check whether circumstances explain the change
- New phone or recent setup: Samsung lists initial setup and optimization as possible reasons for faster drain. A change soon after setup does not, by itself, prove that the battery is defective. Samsung’s guidance does not give a universal time for this activity to settle.
- Weak or unstable reception: Poor network signal is another possible cause of higher battery use. Consider whether the drain occurs mainly in places where reception is weak.
- Background apps: An app can continue using power even when you are not actively using it. Use the battery-usage screen before restricting apps so you can target the likely source.
- Battery condition: A battery is a consumable component. Samsung UK says repeated charging and discharging gradually reduce its capacity, and that lost capacity cannot be restored through settings.
These are possible explanations, not proof of a single cause. Samsung’s battery-drain guidance, updated 28 April 2026, discusses setup, signal, apps and battery condition.
6. Run Samsung’s battery diagnostics if the drain persists
On supported devices, use Samsung Members to open Phone diagnostics and run the Battery status test. Samsung also documents diagnostics through Device care on Galaxy phones running Android 12 or later; availability and the route can vary. See Samsung’s current instructions for checking device status and running diagnostics.
If the diagnostic indicates poor battery condition, or the battery continues to drain unusually after you have checked app use and settings, contact Samsung-authorized service about an inspection. Settings can reduce avoidable power use, but they cannot restore capacity already lost through battery aging.
