Yes, Samsung Notes saves notes in the app, and it can sync them with Samsung Cloud—but cloud sync must be enabled. Sync keeps notes aligned across devices signed in to the same Samsung account; it is not necessarily an independent, recoverable history, because edits and deletions can carry across devices. For another copy, export important notes as files.

What “backed up” means for Samsung Notes

There are three different protections to distinguish: saving inside the app, syncing notes through Samsung Cloud, and making a separate file copy. Samsung says notes are automatically saved in Samsung Notes. Samsung Cloud sync is an additional setting, not something to assume is active on every device or account. Samsung’s Notes feature guide explains the app’s save and sync options.

  • In-app saving: keeps your notes in Samsung Notes on the device.
  • Samsung Cloud sync: makes notes available in Samsung Notes on compatible devices using the same Samsung account.
  • Manual export: saves an individual note in a file format such as PDF or text, giving you a separate copy that does not automatically update with the note.

Samsung also offers device backup and restore controls. However, Samsung’s support guidance does not establish that every Samsung Notes item is included in every device-backup configuration. Check the backup categories shown on your own device rather than treating device backup as a blanket guarantee for Notes.

How to check or turn on Samsung Cloud sync

  1. Open Samsung Notes on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the three-line Menu, then open Settings.
  3. Select Sync with Samsung Cloud, grant any requested permissions, and turn on the switch.
  4. Confirm the device is signed in to the Samsung account you use on your other devices. Choose whether to sync using Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi and mobile data if that option appears.
  5. If you need to start a sync immediately, use Sync Now where available.

Samsung’s current US instructions give this Notes route, but labels and menus can differ by device, operating-system version, and country. Samsung’s broader Cloud controls may be under Settings > Accounts and backup; use the options displayed on your device. Samsung Notes settings and sync instructions and Samsung’s explanation of Samsung Cloud sync describe the relevant controls.

Sync is convenient, but it mirrors changes

Samsung describes sync as keeping data matched across devices using the same Samsung account. That includes changes: Samsung India explains that when a synced note is edited or deleted on one device, it is also edited or deleted on every device logged into that account. Sync therefore helps you continue working across devices, but it should not be mistaken for an untouched historical copy that can undo an accidental deletion.

For a note you cannot afford to lose, keep a manual export in addition to sync. An export is a separate saved file; Samsung’s cited guidance does not say it provides version history or updates automatically when you later edit the note.

Samsung Cloud sync, device restore, and exports compared

Method Best for What happens to edits or deletions How you retrieve the data
Samsung Cloud sync Accessing the same notes on compatible devices Changes and deletions can propagate to synced devices. Open Samsung Notes on a compatible device signed in to the same Samsung account; individual synced note files are not downloadable from the Cloud web portal.
Samsung Cloud device backup and restore Restoring supported device data during setup or from backup settings Not stated as a note-history or undo mechanism in the cited guidance. Use the restore options during device setup or in the device’s backup settings; available categories vary.
Manual note export Keeping a separate copy of an individual note The saved file does not automatically reflect later edits, according to the cited guidance. Open the exported file in a compatible app or location where you saved it.

Samsung’s backup and restore instructions describe starting a backup under Settings > Accounts and Backup > Backup and Restore, and restoring during setup or from the same settings area. Available categories and Cloud service support can vary by country, carrier, and model. Inspect the categories your device actually offers.

How to export a Samsung Note as a separate file

  1. Open the note in Samsung Notes.
  2. Tap More options (the three vertical dots).
  3. Choose Save as file.
  4. Select the format you want: PDF, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, image, or text, then follow the on-screen save steps.

Samsung’s sharing workflow also lists a Samsung Notes file alongside PDF, Word, PowerPoint, image, and text options. These are per-note export or sharing choices; the cited instructions do not promise that every format preserves every Samsung Notes feature. Samsung also supports importing notes from a Samsung account or phone and importing or exporting PDFs. Imported PDFs can be annotated, but Samsung says they cannot be edited as ordinary note text. Samsung’s guide to Notes features and settings covers these options.

Recovering synced notes and device backups

Do not count on the Samsung Cloud website as a place to download an individual synced note. Samsung Canada says synced-app data cannot be viewed or downloaded as individual files through the browser portal; access it by opening the app on a compatible phone or tablet. For device backups, Samsung documents restoring during new-device setup or through backup settings, but the categories available depend on country, carrier, and model. Samsung Canada’s Cloud backup guidance explains the portal limitation.

That same Canadian support page says data unused for more than 12 months may be deleted after advance notice, and that data deleted this way cannot be recovered. This is the retention language on Samsung Canada’s page, not a universal guarantee for every region; follow the current notices and terms for your Samsung account and location.

Important exceptions and compatibility notes

OneNote sync is no longer available according to current US guidance

Samsung’s current US troubleshooting page says, “The feature for syncing Samsung Notes with Microsoft OneNote is no longer available.” It also says the feature is unavailable on devices running One UI 9 and recommends Samsung Cloud instead. Older Samsung how-to pages may still describe selecting Notes folders for OneNote or viewing a feed in Outlook, so do not assume those older instructions represent current availability. Samsung’s current OneNote troubleshooting guidance states the limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Galaxy AI PDF overlay translations are a narrow exception

Samsung says PDF overlay translations generated with Galaxy AI cannot be saved in their original translated state and do not support sync, sharing, or backup and restore. This exception concerns those translated overlays; it should not be generalized to all Samsung Notes or all PDFs. See Samsung’s Notes feature guide.
