If Samsung Keyboard is missing, frozen, closing, lagging, or ignoring taps, first confirm it is selected as the default. Then close open apps, optimize Device care, restart, and check for software updates. Try Safe mode to test whether a downloaded app is interfering. Clear Samsung Keyboard data only after these simpler checks: it removes saved words and keyboard settings. A factory reset erases all device data and belongs at the end of the process, not the beginning.
Samsung’s menu names and paths vary by model, region, carrier, and software version. If your labels differ, look for the equivalent setting on your phone.
Start by checking which keyboard is selected
If the keyboard does not appear, or a different layout opens, make sure Samsung Keyboard is the active default before changing data or resetting the phone.

- Select Samsung Keyboard.
Samsung recommends its preinstalled keyboard. If the problem happens only with a third-party keyboard, contact that app’s developer. The exact path may differ on older and newer software. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guide and Samsung Gulf’s guidance describe the relevant checks.

Try the low-risk fixes first
Close apps and optimize Device care
Close open apps, then go to Settings > Device care > Optimize now. On some versions, the section is called Battery and device care. Samsung says this action closes background apps and optimizes certain settings; it does not erase your keyboard’s saved words.
Restart the phone
A restart can clear minor software issues. Open the Power menu using your model’s Power button or, on some devices, the Quick settings panel. Choose Restart. The way to open that menu depends on the phone.

Install available software updates
Open Settings > Software update > Download and install or Check for updates, depending on the software. Samsung notes that Verizon devices may display System updates instead. If an update is available, follow the phone’s prompts and test the keyboard afterward. Samsung’s US update instructions cover the update check.
Find out whether another app is interfering
Safe mode runs Samsung apps without third-party apps, so it can help distinguish an app conflict from a problem that persists independently of downloaded apps.

- Start the phone in Safe mode using the instructions for your Galaxy model.
- Try typing in an app where the keyboard previously failed.
- If Samsung Keyboard works in Safe mode, restart the phone normally and remove recently installed apps one at a time. Check the keyboard after each removal.
If it still fails in Safe mode, a downloaded app may not be the cause. Samsung’s steps and Safe mode guidance are in its US troubleshooting guide.
Match the fix to the symptom
The keyboard appears, but taps do not register
Check whether a screen protector, case, dirt, or another obstruction is affecting touch input. Samsung Gulf also suggests temporarily testing without Screen Reader or Voice Access, and identifies low storage as a possible cause. These checks can help when the keyboard is visible but the phone does not respond to taps; menu labels for accessibility features vary by software.

The keyboard closes while you type
Samsung US suggests adjusting edge-screen sensitivity when the keyboard closes during typing. This is especially relevant if touches near the display edge may be triggering an edge action. Look for the edge-screen sensitivity setting available on your model.
The screen was dropped or is visibly damaged
A damaged display can cause touch-input trouble that software steps will not fix. If the phone was recently dropped or the screen has visible damage, arrange assessment through Samsung’s authorized repair path rather than repeatedly resetting the device. Samsung Philippines’ touch-screen guidance recommends an authorized service center or repair appointment.

Clear Samsung Keyboard data only if the earlier checks fail
Clearing keyboard data is more disruptive than restarting or changing the default keyboard: it deletes Samsung Keyboard settings, saved words, and learned keyboard data. If you are willing to lose that personalization, open Settings > Apps, use the sort or filter control to show system apps, select Samsung Keyboard, choose Force stop, then open Storage and tap Clear data. Some software versions also offer a cache-clearing option; use the options shown on your device. Samsung’s instructions are available in its US guide, Gulf guide, and Korea touch-screen article. The Korea article, dated 2024-02-03, explicitly warns that function names and paths can vary by model, software, and app version.
Reserve a factory reset for the last resort
If the keyboard still fails after software troubleshooting, Samsung US lists a factory data reset as a last resort. It erases all data on the device, not just keyboard settings.
- Back up the device before resetting.
- Be prepared to enter your account credentials during setup.
- After setup, test the keyboard before reinstalling apps. This can help avoid immediately restoring a downloaded app that may be involved.
If the reset does not resolve a touch problem, or physical damage is suspected, seek repair assessment instead of repeating software resets. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance covers factory reset as a final step.
