Samsung Electronics posted record revenue and operating profit for the second quarter of 2026, even as its combined Mobile eXperience (MX) and Networks businesses swung to an operating loss. The headline figures are not contradictory: semiconductor-led Device Solutions (DS) supplied nearly all of the company’s operating profit, while Samsung said higher component costs squeezed earnings in MX despite year-over-year revenue growth.
What Samsung reported for Q2 2026
For the quarter ended June 30, Samsung Electronics reported consolidated revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion—both quarterly records. Its Device Solutions (DS) division, which includes the semiconductor business, generated KRW 127.5 trillion in revenue and KRW 89.2 trillion in operating profit, according to Samsung’s July 30 Q2 results release.
The mobile-related result was weaker. Samsung reported KRW 33.2 trillion in revenue and an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion for MX and Networks combined. That is not a standalone smartphone result: Samsung’s release does not break out phone-only revenue or profit. The figures show a loss in the combined business grouping, not that the company’s phones individually lost money.

Samsung’s consolidated result combines businesses with very different performance. In Q2, DS alone recorded KRW 89.2 trillion in operating profit, close to the company-wide KRW 89.5 trillion. That semiconductor-led result more than offset losses elsewhere, including the reported MX and Networks loss. A record for Samsung Electronics therefore does not mean every division—or every product category—was profitable.

The contrast is also about scale and accounting scope: consolidated results cover the whole company, while the MX and Networks figure covers two businesses together. Reading the record as evidence that Samsung’s smartphone business was thriving would go beyond what the published segment figures establish.
Why did MX earnings fall while revenue grew?
Samsung said MX revenue increased year over year, supported by solid Galaxy S26 series sales and strong momentum in the Galaxy A series. It attributed the earnings decline to elevated component cost pressures across the industry. In other words, Samsung’s stated explanation is that sales supported revenue while higher costs weighed on earnings; the company did not publish a phone-only margin or a specific component-cost amount in these results.

This distinction matters for readers: revenue measures sales, while operating profit reflects what remains after operating costs. Higher sales can coexist with weaker or negative operating profit when costs rise enough. Samsung’s statement explains the direction of the pressure, but it does not quantify how much of the combined segment’s loss came from smartphones rather than Networks.

In Q1 2026, Samsung reported KRW 38.1 trillion in revenue and KRW 2.8 trillion in operating profit for MX and Networks. In Q2, the combined segment reported lower revenue of KRW 33.2 trillion and an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion. The move from profit to loss is a substantial sequential reversal, although quarter-to-quarter comparisons can reflect seasonality and changes in business mix as well as underlying cost or demand shifts. Samsung’s April 30 Q1 results release provides the earlier figures.

What the Q3 outlook does—and does not—tell us
On October 8, 2026, Samsung announced guidance estimating Q3 consolidated sales of approximately KRW 195 trillion and operating profit of approximately KRW 107.40 trillion. These are estimates, not finalized results, and the guidance does not disclose Q3 MX performance. It is newer than the Q2 divisional report, but it cannot establish whether Samsung’s phone business recovered, remained under pressure, or changed its profit contribution. What to watch in the next divisional report
- MX operating profit: whether the combined mobile-related business returns to profit, and how Samsung describes the role of component costs.
- Revenue versus earnings: whether Galaxy demand continues to support sales and whether that translates into improved profitability.
- Reporting scope: Samsung’s current disclosed result combines MX and Networks, so it should not be treated as a phone-only scorecard unless the company reports a separate figure.
