Samsung announced its Gauss generative AI models in November 2023, then launched the Galaxy S24 with a broader AI experience called Galaxy AI in January 2024. Samsung says Galaxy AI uses certain aspects of Gauss, but the S24 was not announced as running on Gauss alone: Samsung and Google also named Gemini Pro, Imagen 2 and Gemini Nano as parts of the phone’s AI stack.

What Samsung announced—and when

  1. November 8, 2023: At Samsung AI Forum 2023, Samsung introduced Samsung Gauss, a family of three generative models: Gauss Language, Gauss Code and Gauss Image. Samsung said it was then using Gauss for employee productivity and planned to expand it into Samsung products. Samsung’s announcement.
  2. January 17, 2024: Samsung and Google Cloud announced that Galaxy S24 devices would use Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 through Vertex AI, as well as Gemini Nano for on-device tasks. Partnership announcement.
  3. January 18, 2024: Samsung introduced Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 series, highlighting features including Live Translate, Circle to Search, Generative Edit, Chat Assist and Note Assist. Galaxy S24 launch announcement.

Did Samsung Gauss power the Galaxy S24?

Gauss was part of the story, but not the whole story. Samsung’s explainer says Galaxy AI uses certain aspects of Samsung Gauss. The S24 launch and Google Cloud partnership announcements also identify Google models and services in the experience. The most accurate description is a hybrid Galaxy AI stack combining Samsung-developed capabilities with Google-provided components—not a phone powered exclusively by Gauss. Gauss, Galaxy AI and Google models compared

Component What it is Role established in Samsung’s announcements
Samsung Gauss Samsung’s family of Language, Code and Image generative models Initially described as supporting employee productivity, with planned expansion to Samsung products; Samsung later said Galaxy AI uses certain aspects of Gauss.
Galaxy AI The branded AI experience introduced with Galaxy S24 Groups user-facing capabilities such as Live Translate, Circle to Search, Generative Edit, Chat Assist and Note Assist.
Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 Google models accessed through Vertex AI Samsung and Google Cloud announced their use in the Galaxy S24 implementation.
Gemini Nano Google’s on-device model Samsung and Google Cloud identified it for on-device tasks on Galaxy S24.

Which S24 AI features run on the phone?

The partnership announcement specifically identifies Gemini Nano for on-device tasks. It identifies Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 through Vertex AI, indicating cloud-based components in the announced implementation. Samsung’s launch materials describe the user-facing features, but the cited announcements do not map every individual feature to a specific model or state that every feature works entirely on-device. Avoid assuming that all Galaxy AI tools use Gauss, or that every task is processed locally.

For a practical comparison, separate three questions: whether a task is processed on-device or through cloud services; whether it supports communication, productivity or image editing; and whether the named component comes from Samsung or Google. Samsung’s announcements establish that multiple providers and processing approaches are involved, rather than a single model underpinning every feature.

What the announcement does not establish

The 2023 and 2024 announcements describe the launch-era model relationship and capabilities. They do not establish current 2026 pricing, stock, support duration or regional availability of each feature. Nor do they provide a complete feature-by-feature account of which model processes each request. Those details should be checked against current Samsung documentation for the specific device, region and software version.
